Can someone tell me what the Progesterone suppositories are supposed to do?

Can someone tell me what the Progesterone suppositories are supposed to do?
They are disgusting, and I have no problem taking them (or inserting them), but why? How do they help with the IUI? I have asked the dr and if I ask once more I think he is going to think I am the stupidest person alive.
ETA: Taking them did sound like I was swallowing them so I changed it, thank you.

they should melt and get absorbed. Wearing a pantinliner should help. In a nutshell I was told the progesterone is the glue that makes the baby stick.

I think progesterone is the hormone that is present to keep a pregnancy until the placenta is developed enough to kick in and take over.
I use them too. They're not too bad.

this is gonna sound stupid... but you are inserting them, not swallowing them right. The words "taking them" just sounds funny to me, but I guess that is what you do.
