Can someone recommend an accountant that can do my taxes ???
I normally do them on my own. But with the residency change.... I think I may have an accountant do them this year.
I am also noticing that if I file married filing separately (me and my wife)... I will get back a much larger total refund ($1000 more) compared to married filing jointly. I want the accountant to investigate this as well.
Any recommendations? If you can post how much he/she is charging you... that would help as well.

I do. We used to do them ourselves too. We were able to get a significant amount back once we realized we could deduct a lot more.

Oh believe me I have technically "owned" for the past four years. I know the tax advantages you get owning a home. 
The residency change from NYC to Nassau has me a little screwed up. I will most likely continue to do my taxes on my own after this year.
But the big issue is the Married filing Separately thing. My boss said I should try punching in the numbers to see if it makes a difference and in my case it makes a BIG difference.
If I am going this route... I think having the accountant check it out would put my mind at ease.  I can always take the tax forms my accountant prints out... and compare them to the tax forms i printed out just now and see if I would have done them correctly myself.

Be very careful about married filing singly and married filing jointly.... The rules are different for them. For example, phaseouts are much lower for Married Filing single then married filing jointly. Plus, if one of you itemized when MFS the other one has to, too and could lose their standard deduction.
I have a couple of accountants that I would with that I can refer. FM is you want info.

Yeah I am aware of most of the rules with filing separately. My wife gets killed filing separately because she is forced to itemize. She ends up owing a little.
But I end up getting quite a bit more back itemizing... i guess since my tax bracket is so low with all of the deductions I get. Plus this entire year I claimed single-0 so i had a lot of taxes taken out of my paycheck.

I was going to go to an accountant too this year but started doing them on Turbo Tax and found the same thing - got more money back as married filing separately than married filing jointly. We itemized everything on both and one had to owe a little but what we got back on the other was far more than the two combined.

We used turbotax last year, but i just don't know if we're getting every possible deduction especialy since FH is consulting now

Our accountant is Michael Alcabes in Sayville. ITs a father and son (both with the same name) and they are GREAT. When DH first went there they got back $$ for him from the previous years tax return that was done by H&R Block. We went last night and are VERY happy with what we are getting back.

DH and his whole family has been going to Jerry Kaplan in Hauppauge for years. We love him and he is really good! We always get back lots of money!
