Re: Can someone explain Temping??

okay - here's what i know...

1. Get a basal thermometer. These are NOT the same as the - i'm sick, take my temp.

2. You take it in the morning - at the same time EVERY DAY. This is important.

3. You take it before MOVING. For me - dave wakes me up and hands me the thermometer. On Sunday - his only late work day - the alarm goes off at 8:55 and he shuts it off - because i can't get up until the temp is taken.

4. You record the temp - i think most of us use FF.

it will help you learn a lot. When you can expect to O (but you'll know the day AFTER)...you learn to see patterns in your temps.

Re: Can someone explain Temping??

I LOVED this website when I was investigating charting my temps. It has a free charting "course" that teaches you everything you need to know about charting.

The basics though? When you chart, your pre-ovulation temps are considered "low". After ovulation, you should see a clear upward shift in your temperature. Through charting, you can actually confirm you have ovulated.

i will post my first chart for you in one sec (having it resized)... you can clearly see a shift after I ovulated.

What Jess said...
But also wanted to add, you're looking for a biphasic temperature pattern - meaning one level of low temperatures and then a second level of high temps. Your temperature will fluctuate from day to day, but two distinct patterns should emerge. Your temperature rises after you've ovulated due to the presence of progesterone in your system, so temping won't tell you if you've ovulated until after you have, but after you've been temping for a few months, you'll begin to see what's normal for you.

HTH. Good luck!

Also - look at the OPK (green section). I got my positive OPK on the 27th - but my temp didn't shift until the 29th...indicating that i ovulated on the 28th.

In order to understand it and recognize what you should be looking for, I suggest reading the book "Taking charge of your fertility"

there is also a website which is WONDERFUL and has chat boards as well

I logged my temp in everyday

Sorry to hijack, but is this your current chart? You may want to consider the 29th as a possibly ovulation date when it comes time to test because the sharpest increase comes between the 29th and 30th and you also had EWCM on the 29th. Looks good though - that spike at 9dpo is a good sign!

right - this is because a +opk means that you WILL ovulate within 12-36 hours so actual ovulation comes after +opk

I think snowflake was trying to make a different point about OPKs than this, but so the OP doesn't get confused, actually a +OPK means you MAY ovulate within 12-36 hours. It measures a surge in lutenizing hormone which means your body is gearing up to ovulate. But you can have a +OPK and then not ovulate.

understood
when i used the word "will" i meant that it SHOULD happen in the future; as opposed to have already happened or happening at that time

I just edited my post while you were replying! Chat Icon I thought that's what you meant, I just didn't know if the OP would know.

And she now seems to be gone...I think we all scared her away! Chat Icon

right - and combine the Positive OPK with temping and you can see for sure if you did ovulate. (the only other way would be a correctly timed sonogram or MRI i think???).

Oh, definitely not! Chat Icon I'm just surprised FF gave you solid lines because they seem to be like the gestapo when I have fertile CM after O Chat Icon Chat Icon And I just thought I should mention the possibility.

Also, I'm not sure how you are at telling the difference (I'm cr@p at it!) but the EWCM might've been leftover semen from the day before!

considering we only bd'd on twice on sunday (once at like 6:30 and once at 1:30 AM)...i don't think it was semen..

that's why i'm so doubtful about this month.

ETA: i go by strechiness of the CM....

I'm not sure how it works - you know, like what he might've seen that would tell him you were about to ovulate. I think you'd need to ask him.

It's completely possible to miss a surge with your OPK as well. I wouldn't panic, you're only on CD13 - I normally don't O until around CD18-20

Semen can be quite stretchy too. I think TCOYF says something about rolling it in a ball and dropping it in a glass of water. But, well, that's not really so convenient in the bathroom at work! Chat Icon

And I wouldn't worry about how many times you BD'd - it only takes one time! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
