Crazy Fish Bar & Gill has opened in Port Jefferson, in the Trader’s Cove building that used to house La Parilla.

Owners Stacy and Richard Gertz come to Port Jefferson with a great deal of experience: They owned the long-closed Panama Hatties in Huntington from 1987 to 2003 and established it as one of Long Island’s finest restaurants.

Both the vibe and the menu at Crazy Fish, she said, are far more relaxed. The restaurant sprawls over two floors and two decks. Original artwork from third graders at nearby Terryville Road Elementary School has been integrated into the décor.

The food emphasizes seafood but draws its influences from all over the globe. Among the starters ($10 to $15): clams and oysters on the half shell, Thai calamari with seaweed salad, seafood nachos, baked clams, seared tuna with watermelon and baby arugula. Mains ($24 to $32) include a broiled seafood platter, smoked swordfish, fish taco platter, penne alla vodka with shrimp and a grilled rib-eye with crumbled blue cheese. Lobsters (market price) can be had steamed, stuffed or broiled.

The lunch menu features imaginative sandwiches the most expensive of which is an open-faced lobster club, $16, with baby arugula, bacon and green-onion drizzle on a brioche.

Happy hour, Gertz said, is a big deal, extending from 3 to 7 p.m. seven days a week. All drinks, except bottles of wine, are 25 percent off.

Crazy Fish Bar & Gill is at 9 Trader’s Cove, Port Jefferson, 631-509-4848, crazyfishbarandgill.com
