Can Anyone Help Me out Here??
My boys just turned three weeks on Friday (but they were 4 weeks early). We are bottlefeeding. Starting at the hospital they were taking anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 ounce. Slowly they have moved up to 3-4 ounces. My pediatrician told me that was fine and that I should let the feedings go no longer then 4 hours in between. My boys have been pretty regular of wanting to be fed every 3 hours.
The past weekend and today they have been sucking down all 4 ounces a feeding and wake up screaming to be fed usually around 2 1/2 hours. I don't get it...i thought the more they ate the longer in between feedings? I can't spend a 1/2 hour consoling them at night to hold off till 3 hours.
So my question is...do i follow what the baby is telling me and increase their feedings to 4 1/2 ounces - 5 ounces....do i wait to be instructed to do that by my Pediatrician?? Do i even need to call my pediatrician about this?
It's very frustrating because i thought the older they got and more they ate the longer the feedings went. I feel like i am going in totally the opposite direction.
Any advice anyone can provide i would be so grateful!

Re: Can Anyone Help Me out Here??
Do they seem like they can take more than 4oz at the end of a feeding? It may be a growth spurt or that they're hungrier & it's time to up the amount again.
Also if you're overfeeding them (which I dont' think you are), it could be a bellyache. When I was overfeeding my son, he would spit up a tremendous amount.
Hope that helps. I wish I had more answers for you.

I would feed them if they seem hungry no matter what the doc says. My doctor has been telling me to feed DS every four hours. Well, Ryan rarely goes more than three hours between feedings. However, he is sleeping through the night, so I don't care how often he eats during the day.
Anyway, I say feed them when they seem hungry.

Definetly want more. And sometimes they suck so fast from the bottle that they get gas. They are definetly growing too. They have not been spitting up too much either.

Since it's happening with BOTH of them, I'd say definitely increase the amount & see if that helps. Unfortunately there is no science to babies. I believe that you need to go with your gut on this one.

Re: Can Anyone Help Me out Here??
I always fed Ryan until he was full at that age. He was taking more than the average baby when he was born (he was over 9lbs at birth) and the hospital told me not to feed him more than 2-3 oz's his first few days. Well that amount was not enough for him and all he would do was cry until I gave him more. So basically I listened to that little voice inside my head and did the right thing. I say listen to your mommy instincts and you will make the right decisions.

I agree, sounds like a growth spurt. I would feed them as much as they want. If they spit up a lot after a few minutes then you know you are over feeding them. It's hard to over feed a baby, they usually spit out the bottle once they are full. My son went through a growth spurt at 3 wks.

Same thing happened to Ava at the same age. She would scream and scream and scream, and I didn't think to give her more, then when I finally did, I was like, DUH!

Kerri had a growth spurt at that age...I say if they want more then feed them. They will let you know when they are full

I always say to follow the baby's lead when it comes to feeding. They know when they are hungry and full way better then we could ever know!
