Camping in October... Crazy?!
Went camping the end of June with a bunch of families and had a great time, but had to cut it a day early bc it poured. Figured the one rainy day in the summer. lol Anyway, was together with the same families over Labor Day weekend and talked about going one more weekend before winter. When we went in June it got cold at night so I can't imagine how cold it's going to be mid October. We had fun and the kids were all great together playing while the adults hung out. I'm just worried about the cold and earlier sunsets. I don't want to be the wimp of the group but reality is setting in. We sleep in tents. There's electricity at the site but can't imagine plugging in a space heater. Lol DS would be missing soccer and I also feel like Fall weekends are already getting booked up. It's right on a river and last time the kids were occupied playing in it. Gonna be freezing this time.
Thoughts? Would you do it? Kids are all in school and we wouldn't even get to leave till 5pm Friday night which means getting on the campsite close to 8pm to set up tents, grills, start fire, etc all in the dark and cold. Yeah... I'm pretty much answering my own question. Lol

Camping in October... Crazy?!
I'm not a fan of camping at all but DH and his son are involved in Boy Scouts and they camp one weekend a month ALL YEAR LONG!!! I think they are crazy but they have fun. They usually leave Friday evenings and have to set up in the dark. But, that being said, October can be really nice and mild or chilly. If you have warm sleeping bags and dress warmly, I could imagine that sitting around a camp fire on a brisk fall night could be really nice.

Re: Camping in October... Crazy?!
I'd spin it as bonding time for my DH and DS and let them go if they were really into it.
My family lives Upstate and it's like the arctic in the fall mornings.

Camping in October... Crazy?!
I camp and love it but I don't think I'd do Oct with my son. I'm not worried about me being cold....I'd get through it but he'd be freezing. We camp first weekend in June in Montauk and its freezing at night.

I guess it depends on the person.
My idea of "roughing it" is booking a Hilton because the Marriott is already full.

I once told friends that were going camping that my idea of roughing it is a hotel that does not provide robes in the room. Dead serious.

Re: Camping in October... Crazy?!
we used to go camping every Columbus day weekend before kids... not sure I would do it with kids... it gets mighty chilly at night... usually in the 40's but there have def been 30's too depending on how far upstate you go... That said... I wouldn't bring the kids.

Re: Camping in October... Crazy?!
I was tent camping in November last year. A sub-zero degree sleeping bag and a couple of layers of sweats and I was nice and toasty at night...
It's those middle-of-the-night bathroom runs that really get you!

Camping in October... Crazy?!
I used to go with girl scouts the week before Halloween. We would wear hats and gloves to bed and sometimes 2-3 pairs or sweats or extra blankets. Granted we weren't family so we didn't cuddle. As mentioned above, bathroom runs were coooooooold. During the day it was nice.
Early Oct could still be warm. Depends on how late you're going and where it is.
SO if you do decide to go, make sure you line the tent with blankets or use mattresses. Bring plenty of layers, extra blankets and hats and gloves.

this is me too ... but I hate camping any time. I used to go when I was a kid with my parents all the time hates it then still do. the closest you get me to going camping now is my parents trailer that is at a campsite. which has TV a bathroom, kitchen, AC and heat. so basically its mini house on a campground
my dad closes the camper in I think the beginning of October (its sometime in October) because that's when the campground I assume closes

Re: Camping in October... Crazy?!
Here's my suggestion, find a campground that rents cabins. You can still do all the fun outdoors stuff during the day, but have someplace warm to sleep at night. The grown ups can still light a fire and hang out doors- just bring some extra layers.

That's a good idea.
We used to go mid-late September. Some times it was actually hot during the day& we didn't need layers at night. Other times we sleep in jeans & sweathshirts in sleeping bags with blankets on top.
I also had a friend that would just sleep in her car.

Camping in October... Crazy?!
We are camping in the Poconos the weekend of October 11th. I am just planning to wear sweats at night and sleep in a warm sleeping bag! I think mid-October is my limit though.

Camping in October... Crazy?!
I dont think it is that crazy of an idea, getting there that late would be my concern BUT think about how beautiful the fall foliage is. You will most likely have a fire burning during the day and at night? Also you will be prepared with warm clothes. The plus is less bug bites :)

Re: Camping in October... Crazy?!
I don't know...I've gone in September, and even then was cold.
I mean, people do it, so there are surely ways to stay warm...I would just be prepared.
