Well, for one thing, if you have a gun for home protection its unlikely that the intruder is going to wait a sec for you to get your gun out of the safe...
and second... sorry kids, Crazies and Criminals are going to get their guns regardless of how much everyone wants to regulate gun control.
Agreed.
The focus needs to be on increased mental health services.
Guns don't kill people....people kill people.
Criminals are not obtaining their guns legally.
Let's focus on securing our schools, increasing access to screening and mental health services.
Should their be screening to see if you're eligible for a gun -- yes, but I don't think this is the true issue.
This. People are always going to have more access to guns. Look up killings in Chicago and they have the tightest gun laws.
More guns are being purchased on the black market. More people are stocking up on ammo and guns due to the fear that they won't be able to have them anymore.
They won't go away. It's like banning cars because of drunk drivers. Or stabbings because of kitchen knives. Or even medicine due to overdoses.
Mental illness is a giant factor, The government keeps closing facilities as well as limit funding. This should be a priority.
I do agree with the fact that people of firearms need to be responsible and have fun locks on firearms and ammo kept in separate locations.
FYI- I grew up with guns in the house and there has never been an issue. We were taught to respect the weapons and to never touch them. We never did nor had a desire to...
I see what you are saying, but why is it so hard to just TRY more regulation? Just freaking TRY it.
You can go on and on about mental health, which, yes, needs work, but just freaking TRY to regulate guns. See what happens.
I'm sorry, but I think shutting down to ideas about gun control is ignorant.

Another day, another shooting.
Yes and nothing changes
Seems it.
And another. Yup. 2 shootings at colleges today.
Two since the start of this thread. Wake up people.

What I would like to see is the following: 1. Permit system where you submit to both a background check and a mental health screening. If you pass both parts, then you could start to apply for a license.
2. Classes (like drivers ed) where you learn how to shoot, store, maintain, carry, safety, and laws of your state.
3. Written and practical testing.
4. Once you pass you receive a license to have guns.
5. Liability insurance for the guns and the individual
6. Each gun you own would need to be registered and insured to the individual.
7. Guns should have a GIN (gun identification number) like a vin.
8. If a gun is stolen report it immediately to police.
9. The only type of gun that could be left in a nightstand legally would be one that has a finger print ID system so that it can only be used by the registered user. All other guns would have to be locked up when not in use.
10. Private sales would, like cars, need to notify the state for a new title of ownership.
Edit you would have license renewals with a new mental health screening.
That's a good plan.

Guns do have serial numbers FYI. older and antique guns do not have serial numbers. I would want to close that loophole.

Yes! I love you for this post. Also I read about how in Switzerland (I think) they require anyone who wants to buy a gun to join a gun club for a year. After a year, the club can vouch for or be against you getting the gun. I feel like this is a great way to weed out the crazies
Also for those who cite Chicago as a place with high crime and harsh gun controls, i read that most confiscated guns are from nearby areas with lax gun control, and that Chicagos gun laws have actually got more lenient over the last several years
I live in NC and where I live, guns are huge. They have huge gun shows every few weeks. I don't think a gun ban would ever happen, but I am just left scratching my head as to why responsible gun owners are against some gun regulations. Isn't it worth it if we can stop even one of these massacres?

Re: Call to Action - From People Magazine
I agree with most of the comments calling for reform.
I also agree with the poster who wrote the following, I said something nearly identical to DH earlier this week:
"What I would like to see is the following: 1. Permit system where you submit to both a background check and a mental health screening. If you pass both parts, then you could start to apply for a license.
2. Classes (like drivers ed) where you learn how to shoot, store, maintain, carry, safety, and laws of your state.

Also, I think we need to prosecute people whose guns fall into the wrong hands. Its your responsibility as a gun owner to keep your weapon secured and away from children/others. So, do what you think -- lock it up (hopefully) and teach your kids (hopefully) but if they find your weapon and hurt or kill someone you go to jail PERIOD and lose the right to own a gun PERIOD. It's not just "guns don't kill people, people kill people" or just a mental health issue. I am part of a moms for gun reform group on facebook and every week there are a handful of new stories about kids finding guns laying around, in purses sitting in the backseat, in shopping carts, etc and shooting and killing people either intentionally or unintentionally. Like the 2yo whose grandma left a loaded gun in the back seat next to him and he shot her while she was driving. People are so careless with their weapons and if they are going to have them they need to be held accountable.
I read this article recently and its mindblowing:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkblog/wp/2015/10/14/people-are-getting-shot-by-toddlers-on-a-weekly-basis-this-year/
Also I found out from my ILs that my BIL/SIL keep a loaded gun in their nightstand and keep the drawer open for easy access. They have a 2 year old and watch another 2 year old in their house. I am literally blown away by their irresponsibility and stupidity.
