C-Section Moms- receovery question(s)

This is my first c-section. i have 3 other children, this one is breech, so delivery and recovery is going to be different for me this time around.
I need the good/bad/and ugly on the recovery, and a realistic view of what is going to be like when i get home taking care of 4 kids.
DH will be home some days, but if we have snow, he will have to go do removal. Here are some ?'s
-how soon after can i shower?
-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery?
-can i do stairs when i get home?
-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil?
- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds?
-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?
-are pants/underwear uncofortable?

Re: C-Section Moms- receovery question(s)

I have only had c-sections, so I cant compare it to vag births...

-how soon after can i shower?
I think you could shower at the hospital, but I remember showering the day I came home... one of the first things I did...

-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery?
no clue...

-can i do stairs when i get home?
It was recommended to not do stairs, not lift anything heavier then the baby, etc, however my bedroom was on the second floor, so the first few days, once I was up, I had to stay up...

-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil?
TAKE the medication!! Don't try to be a superhero!! The medication allowed me to recover faster and better!

- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds?
yes, however there were a lot of medications you couldnt take because of nursing... they tell you what you can and can't take...

-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?
I didn't try until I got the okay from the doc... didn't want to take any chances (I think it was 4 weeks though)...

-are pants/underwear uncofortable?
I bought super big granny panties from BJs that I wore in the beginning. The incision was a lot lower then I expected- you dont want anything that is going to lay on that incision line... which was basically all of my bikini cut undies... I had a few nursing nightgowns that were my savior for the few week or so... maternity sweatpants were good too, because they went higher than that incision line...

hope that helps!! :)

I Only had C sections, so, I can't compare to vag.

-how soon after can i shower? I showered I think 2 days after.

-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery? Not Sure

-can i do stairs when i get home? I had no choice. My bedrooms and bathrooms are all upstairs. Just take it very slow.

-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil? I only took the pain meds in the hospital. Once I got home, it was tylenol (I'm allergic to the stronger..Advil, Motrin, etc).

- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds? I ***think**** so.

-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?
With my first, No. With my second, she was in the NICU, so, I was driving after DH went back to work 2 weeks later.

-are pants/underwear uncofortable? Buy bigger & stretch. You should be fine.

Re: C-Section Moms- receovery question(s)

-how soon after can i shower?
I showered the next day- as soon as they took out the catheter and IV. I felt like a million bucks after that shower.

-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery?
I don't know. I bled for about 2-3 weeks I believe.

-can i do stairs when i get home?
I don't have stairs, but remember taking it slow going up or down curbs. Just take it slow.

-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil?
I started taking the mess less frequently while still in the hospital because I felt ok. You can get by with OTC pain meds.

- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds?
I didn't breastfeed, but I'm sure there is something you can take.

-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?
I drove around 2 weeks- when they said it was ok.

-are pants/underwear uncofortable?
As long as they don't hit your incision, they're fine.

-how soon after can i shower? After i was up and walking a took one in the hospital, about 3d pp.
-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery? Depends. You will generally lose more blood during surgery. I needed a blood transfusion.
-can i do stairs when i get home?i couldnt for a month but many are able to immediately since you may not have a choice. Just take it slow.
-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil? Yes, some do fine with advil. I would strongly reccommend to take the percocet in the hospital. I was trying to be tough and didnt take it which caused me to not be as mobile as quickly and eventually developed a DVT.
- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds? Percocet and ibuprofen are fine.
-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?i think i drove after 5 weeks.
-are pants/underwear uncofortable? For me, honestly i had to wear high waisted granny panties for a good 6months and still dont like anything rubbing against my scar at 17mo pp. Thats just me, many women feel fine a week later, i just healed differently.

You will have difficultly getting out of bed and up from chairs at first, you can do it but just slower.

C-Section Moms- receovery question(s)

I had a c section and was fine the next day. Very little pain. I def would have been able to take care of other children.

My DH went back to work 2 days after I got home from the hospital.

My biggest issue was dealing with lack of sleep. My csection recovery was honestly nothing.

Eta I did not take pain meds. I took Advil once and I was cause I had a headache more than anything.

-how soon after can i shower? I had my c-section on Wed and showered on Sat. You can't clean the incision directly- just let water fall over it.
-can i do stairs when i get home? I was able to but at a minimum. And you do one step at a time only (as per doctor's orders). Stairs were hard the first week.
-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil? I tried to just do motrin but I was in too much pain. I know it is possible though.
-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up? I drove after 2 weeks
-are pants/underwear uncofortable? No!! Its annoying...I'm 8weeks pp and still wearing granny underwear and high pants.

Re: C-Section Moms- receovery question(s)

I was able to shower the next morning. Pain for me was not easy to control. I took the pain meds but I was in lots of pain. I did not breast feed. I live on the 2nd floor and was told only to used the steps when I had to. I have a friend who sleeped on the main level of her house for the first 2 weeks. Everyone is different. I had a rough recovery. It was long and painful. I would not have been able to take care of other kids. But everyone is different.

-how soon after can i shower? I think the next day but it may be to hard so 2 days after is when I think I did.
-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery? Not sure but I think so. Its not too bad at all!
-can i do stairs when i get home? YES!!
-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil? I was just taking motrin at home. Doc said to take 3-4 at a time.
- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds? Yes, I did in the hospital.
-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up? I drove within the 2 weeks they told me not to.
-are pants/underwear uncofortable? Yes, I wore my nonmaternity PJ pants and sweats that I wore throughout pregnancy in the hospital. Regular underwear are fine but my nurse made my DH go to CVS and buy bloomers, LOL. I would recommend them, true Grandma underwear!

Good luck! It will definitely be painful but not that bad. I picked up my older DS (24-25 lbs) the day I came home. My doctor said it was ok to do so. Although it did hurt it wasnt that bad.

Sorry my answers are above! Messed up the quote though!

Re: C-Section Moms- receovery question(s)

Sounds like you're having a scheduled c section so the recovery for that is much better than an emergency or crash c. I had a crash c and the recovery was worse. For my second the sched c was sooo much better.
I showered the next day. Just couldn't get the incision wet. I was up and walking the next day. The sooner you walk the faster the recovery.
I wasa up and down the steps when I got home so the 4th day. I also was fine with my 2 yr old son to help out. I wasn't allowed to pick him up, but after a week or a little more I really felt great. The more you take care of yourself by walking, not lifting and trying too much too fast you'll be recovering faster.
I also bled more for my crh c section. For my sched c I bled about a week and then just really light.
You'll be fine.

Eta... I think Motrin was fine by the time I got home. Even before I was ok. I wasn't taking anything and you'll be fine to breastfeed

I need the good/bad/and ugly on the recovery, and a realistic view of what is going to be like when i get home taking care of 4 kids.
DH will be home some days, but if we have snow, he will have to go do removal. Here are some ?'s
-how soon after can i shower?
I showered the next day
-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery?
Not sure since this was my first, but I bled pretty heavy the first few days and then it slowed down and lasted about five weeks.
-can i do stairs when i get home?
I was told to avoid stairs if possible but if you really had to use them you should be able to
-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil? I tried just taking the ibuprofen my third day in the hospital and by the evening I was in so much pain that I had to take the stronger meds. But by a week after delivery I was able to stop taking them. It definitely hurts a lot in the beginning, the best thing you can do is keep up w the pain meds.
- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds? Yes, I was able to breastfeed. Use pillows to prop the baby up until you recover enough to hold him or her up.
-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up? I drove after about two weeks. I put a small pillow between the seatbelt and my stomach to keep pressure off my incision.
-are pants/underwear uncofortable? I lived in really high waisted underwear and yoga pants for the first 3 or 4 weeks.

My DD was breech also and since I knew I was going to have to have a csection, I opted to schedule it rather than wait for labor. Since you have children, if I were you I'd schedule it so at least you can be somewhat rested going into it. I feel like that made a big difference in my recovery. Good luck!

Re: C-Section Moms- receovery question(s)

I showered the next day.
I also forced myself to get out of bed and walk around the next day (my sections were at night)
Stairs when I got home were rough. I was told once up and once down daily. I didn't listen and I was in pain from it.
I HATED the pain medicine and only took high doses of motrin every 4-6 hours, from the day after the section for about a week (as the week wore on I needed less)
I drove after 2 weeks, that was the recommended time for both sections. I never heard of 6 weeks.
I wore a maxi pad over my incision where my underwear were. It was ok with tihat. I also wore cotton/yoga pants for at least a week or 2 after the section.
Never had vaginal birth, but I think the bleeding for section is a bit lighter, although there still is a decent amount of bleeding.

Re: C-Section Moms- receovery question(s)

-how soon after can i shower?
Showered in the hospital

-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery?
AJ was breech and c/s. my one and only so I have nothing to compare it to. It was heavy for that first week.

-can i do stairs when i get home?
I lived upstairs. So I did stairs the MOMENT I got home and several times through that first few weeks. I just took it slow. Didn't carry the baby and didn't push myself. It really wasnt that bad at all. It was FINE. Went up and down DAILY.

-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil?
Don't know. I needed mine but I had split my incision open so yeah I was in pain.

- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds?
Yes.

-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?
Yes, around 3 weeks or so but man oh MAN do NOT try to twist to look back (backing up) in a hurry. You will die! Hurts so bad. Otherwise, I did small trips. Like down the road two turns, small trips.

-are pants/underwear uncomfortable?
Nope everything was fine there. Oh yeah I forgot I did have padding, so my answer isnt fair. I had butterfly strips and gauze.

I have only had a c-section so I cant compare for you..

-how soon after can i shower?
They told me I could shower the next day. But I did not shower until I got home. Best shower I ever had!

-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery?
I bled for 4 weeks but it was not very heavy

-can i do stairs when i get home?
Stairs were painful. I was in the hospital for 4 nights and even when I got home, the stairs were a little tough. Not horrible, but I wouldnt choose to go up and down.

-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil?
I do not do prescription pain meds well. For some reason my system reacts really badly to them. I was on prescription Motrin in the hospital and they told me I could take three over the counter Motrins at home. I think i took motrins for about a week.

- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds?
I breastfed with the motrin

-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?
I did not.

-are pants/underwear uncofortable?
I bought granny briefs in a larger size and wore my maternity pants in the begining and I was fine. I actually fet better wearing pants that were snug, if that makes sense.

Re: C-Section Moms- receovery question(s)

how soon after can i shower?
I showered 2nd day after delivery
-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery?
Dont remember that one
-can i do stairs when i get home?
I did but very carefully
-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil?
I took percocet in the hospital and advil when I got home.
- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds?
Yes
-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?
I drove after a week. A little painful but do-able
-are pants/underwear uncofortable?
loose pants work best. I wore like those goucho things.

For me, the first 24 hours was the worst. Couldn't even get out of bed. After that, it was really just being mindful of the staples and moving slowly. Also, I was in labor for 15 hrs before having the c-section so my body was already beat. People tell me scheduled is much easier. I didn't have 3 other kids at home but I think you will be ok, just rest in the hospital and use that time to recover. By the time you get home, you will be feeling much better.
P.S., my neighbors baby was breech and flipped 1 day before labor.

how soon after can i shower?

I showered in the hospital. My third time the nurse made me after 36 hours.

is the bleeding the same as vag delivery?

not sure, but there is a lot of bleeding - I'm assuming it's all from the lining.

can i do stairs when i get home?
The first time my OB told me to do them once a day.

s there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil?

YES! I will tell you - it depends on your anesthesiologist. The one for my third was AWESOME...

if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds?

Yes - they will tell you.

did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?

I think it's 2 weeks and I think it's partially b/c of meds. I was jogging at 2 weeks (as per OB)

are pants/underwear uncofortable?

As long as they go over the scar theree' no problem. My OB also gave me a girdle...it was great. It kept everything tight and stabilized my core. nothing touched the scar then either.

I have only had a c section:

-how soon after can i shower?
I showered the 2nd day in the hospital with my DH's help.

-is the bleeding the same as vag delivery?
Don't know

-can i do stairs when i get home?
I live in a second floor apartment. I got up and down with help as soon as I got home. It was pain free, but it was manageable

-is there any way to recover with NO pain medication? perhaps just advil?
I can't answer this because I was in enough pain that I did take Percocet. I did BF and was told it was fine. I took it all four days in the hospital and came home feeling great. I just took tylenol after that.

- if your breastfeeding, can you still take the pain meds?
Yes, I took what they recommended and I was fine. The LC's had no issues with it.

-did you drive before the 6 weeks was up?

I was told it was 2 weeks for driving. I drove on the 11th day. I have never heard 6 weeks. Your DR should want to see you around the 2 week mark to check your incision and will let you drive. 6 weeks was any working out. I started that at 5 weeks no issues.

-are pants/underwear uncofortable?

I wore maternity pants for around 2 weeks. After that I wore stretch pants and yoga pants until I fit in my old jeans

DD was my first, but she was breech, so I had a planned C-section. I have no other births to compare it to, but this is how my experience went.

I had to wait 2 or 3 days before they let me shower, because they wouldn't take out the IV.

The bleeding is the same as vag. delivery, or a little better according to my nurses.

yes, you can do stairs, but don't do it alot. it may not feel painful while you are doing them, but it did continue my pain.

yes, i took mostly advil and that's about it.
and yes, you can take all the medicines they give you from the hospital while breastfeeding.

I didn't drive before the 6 weeks, so I am not sure how it would have felt. My recovery took long, so probably not.

yes pants were very uncomfortable for me.

If took pain mess first week than fine everyday I would slowly reduce the amount taken

Yes I did

Yes around 4 weeks maybe
-are pants/underwear uncofortable?
Yes just wear elastic
