C-section/gas question
I didn't have a c-section, so I've always wondered about this: why is passing gas so important in terms of recovery from a c-section? I know they asked my roomie every time they were in if she had passed gas (as I plugged my nose , just kidding ), and I saw a few of you mention it. What's the medical reason for it?

Im pretty sure it is to verify that they put your intestines back into place correctly. I could be wrong though, and I has 2 c/s!

I didn't have one but my sister did and they said it's to make sure that your digestive system is working properly.

Re: C-section/gas question
i had abdominal edema too and it hurt like hell - i have a pretty high pain threshold but can honestly say the recovery hurt more than anything i've ever felt. couldnt walk or lay down. who knew gas could hurt SO much

Re: C-section/gas question
Well, they remove your gutts and "put" them on your stomach/chest. Per DH!!!! He saw it all!!!! I keep begging him for details.
So I guess they put it all back in. I am sure the gutts don't like that much being "removed, deposited somewhere else, manipulated again to go back into the empty cavity".

Re: C-section/gas question
I thought it was b/c air gets trapped inside you during surgery, so they want to make sure that it is released

Re: C-section/gas question
With my c-section the nurses constantly were asking me if I passed gas. When they open you up for major surgery tons of air gets closed in when they sew you back up. All I know is that at some points the gas pains were far worse then my incision pain. I was pretty regular before I had and now a week later am having some major problems

It took me at least 6 weeks or even more to go back to normal with that aspect of the recovery.

Re: C-section/gas question
Not to be disgusting but I am still a mess and my daughter is 17 months old.
I cant even wear jeans that are snug anymore. Every time I do, I die with gas pains. I love coffee and now that makes me sick too. I dont think I will ever go back to normal. My mom actually says the same happened to her after her hysterectomy. Years later and she feels the same as well.

I just had chinese food at work with the girls and ate soup with rice and told them I thought I was gonna puke.

Re: C-section/gas question
Thanks ladies. I knew there was a reason but didn't quite grasp it. You c-section mommies sure go through a lot, I remember walking down to see DD in the nursery only a few hours after she was born and seeing all the mommies that I can only assume had c-sections, they were definitely walking more unsteady/uncomfortable.

Re: C-section/gas question
Hmmmm. Nobody ever asked me if I passed gas. Maybe I did it as they were stitching me up, so they knew not to ask.

I was told the same about the air from surgery. and I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with the gas pains being worse than the incision pains at some points.
I had gas pains IN MY CHEST. I could not lay down straight or my chest would hurt (and chest pain, although it was gas pain, is VERY scary to experience) I couldnt breathe, laugh or cry without feeling more pain. so the whole nite the bed was elevated white a bit, I couldnt toss and turn, besides the incision hurting, the gas pockets hurt even more.
as far as how I explained it to DH: (preggos dont read this please ) it felt like someone put boxcutters in my chest and shred them all up into pieces. MY hubby wanted to help me stand from the bed. I told him to let me do it at my pace. If he so much as tugged at my hand an inch more than what I was ready to move, I was in tears.
NOT all C/S moms go through this. actually its more that DONT go through this. but those of us that are affected by the air pockets/gas, know how bad it is.
uhhh, just had some bad flashbacks.

Same here! I had it with both my c/s and I never had so much pain in my life. I try to minimalize it when I mention it on c/s threads when people ask what to expect bc I know many women don't experience it and I don't want to scare the daylights out of some poor Mom to be who might not even have it happen. But I do always mention it just bc to help it go away its important to move. Any abdominal surgery makes someone susceptible to it. It is so painful, I was crying - sobbing with tears running down my face - just plain weeping with pain. And I think I have a pretty high threshold for pain, I've been in active labor 3x and had a previous vbirth. Whatever the case, I am so happy when I hear so many women say they didn't have it happen to them after their c/s.

Re: C-section/gas question
Liz- how weird that we were typing at the same time.
I dont mention it on all c/s threads either, but then there are moms who DONT want things sugarcoated and would rather be prepared.
at one point I was pushing my IV thing down the hall, just to walk it off, yet I was in SO much pain, and they wouldnt remove the IV because my doc had to approve it the next day. (and I KNOW my Dr. he would approve it asap if he knew it was urgent). The weight of pushing the IV made the pain worse, just the pushing motion). well one nurse saw me and goes, "hi sweetie, how are you?" well I lost it, I boo-hoo-ed in buckets and they soon removed the IV. did they think I was joking? and I have a hgh pain tolerance too.
sorry, if anyone wants me to delete this, let me know.

ITA I am right there with you ladies. My DS is almost 4 months and I still get horrible gas pains. I mean they are getting somewhat better but I just feel my stomach is not the same, and my stomach was not that great before my c-section.
