Buying a house without all of the characteristics you imagined????
Well, my DH and I have been house hunting for about two months and saw about forty or so houses. In our mind we know exactly what we want but there is a least one thing that does not fit our expectations in every house. With that said, out of all the houses we have seen, only one of them is close...however...instead of a full basement, it has only a partial small finished basement. The house is perfect otherwise. It's in a great community, good school district and the price just dropped $30,000 in the past month. The price is ridiculous for the house! It is completely updated 4 bedroom colonial with everything else! I say we settle, but DH is set on a full basement! What would you do?

Re: Buying a house without all of the characteristics you imagined????
if its something that you could change down the line I would go for it- If not, I would keep looking esp if you plan on being in the house for awhile. BUT if you love the house and the good out weighs the bad I would put it on a list of we'll see's and continue to look.
We are currently buying a home that doesnt have Everything that we want but this is a starter house for us and we only plan on being there for 5 years or less. And if we decide to stay we are going to add the things that we want...

I agree with this - we decided that the neighborhood/sd was more important than the style of the house.
our house doesnt have everything we want - but we are able to change what we dont like and add what we do, while being in a great SD and neighborhood.
unless you are building the house yourself, it will be hard to find a house with everything you want already there

I would go for it. That seems like the best thing to have to settle for IMO.
Having only a half basement is much better than having to re-do bathrooms or a kitchen, etc....

We can't change it! That is the problem. This may not be a starter house for us, but it may! DH's salary may change significantly in the next five years and if it does then it will not be a starter house for us. But if it does not, it will be ours forever!!! I love the area and the house, but DH is so set on a full finished basement! We are going to see it again on Wednesday and I am hoping DH will reconsider!

i would say go for it! alot of buyers dont realize that you wont find a house that 100% of everything that you are looking for (unless you build it yourself). but if you find 90% (even 80%!) that's pretty d@mn good! good luck!!!
PS - the ONLY requirement i have for my house is a formal dining room. other than that, we're flexible and open to different things.

I understand what you're saying- why not ONLY look at houses with full basements then if Dh wil not consider anything else? cause you can pretty much change everything else EXcEPT- property size, location and basement. If not then Dh will have to consider no full basement.

You will never get 100% of what you are looking for unless you build it yourself. You should prioritize what you need the most and go from there.

Re: Buying a house without all of the characteristics you imagined????
We looked for MANY months in beautiful areas but what we could afford in that area was non happening. We decided to look in another area and finally found "our house". We are going to contract next week and closing sometime in Feb. We love our house but it was so frustrating for months. I would wait and I hope you find the house of your dreams!

Re: Buying a house without all of the characteristics you imagined????
We said a garage and/or basement with outside entrance were top on our list...like in the top three. Our house has neither & while we can add both in the future, its not in our budget now. However, our house had everything else we wanted & exceeded our expectations in some areas. Home buying is a compromise. Would you be able to add another storage area or bonus room type of set-up over the garage or something down the line to compensate for the smaller basement?

First off, the house is huge and has a full attic with plenty of storage space. My DH wants the basment for his Media room and entertainment area. The house has a den and a living room that could be perfect for what he wants. Not to mention that he could use one of the extra bedrooms for what he is looking for!!!

in that case, I think passing on the house would be a mistake. He will still get his wish list, just not exactly as envisioned....you've got to be a little flexible IMO. Good luck, I hope he has a change of heart!

Re: Buying a house without all of the characteristics you imagined????
I think that it sounds like a house that you want. I would say go for it. If everything else is in the condition you want then it is worth it. Like someone else said a partial basement is better than gutting bathrooms or remodeling kitchens.
My big things were good school districts, formal dining room, garage and updated kitchen.
Good luck whatever you decide!
