butterfly bush? grows into a tree?
i suppose it's a lack of trimmig and care from previous owner. is it *supposed* to become a tree size? it's looking a bit crazy, but pretty. it reminds me of sideshow bob right now. (simpsons).
to trim, or not to trim? what's best for the plant, and my yard?

ours got HUGE so we trimmed it and now it got HUGE again!!! we will probably trim it again!

Trimming is actually good for it, every year or so. I believe the best time is in spring after frost but right before it usually starts putting out new growth. Think May 15-30.
Mine is a monster this year, so I'm going to cut it back next year.
If you do have dead branches, you can cut those back anytime you want.
