BTDT MOMS - Classes??

Are childbirthing classes a necessity? My DH and I are torn on if we should take one and my BFF decided not to b/c she thought it wasn't worth it. I'm delivering at St. Charles and I'm assuming I could schedule a tour of the L&D without taking a childbirthing class unless we decide to take one, but is it truly a necessity? Do you actually use what you learn while in labor? I'm 29 weeks and know I should be scheduling now if we are to take one but I'm torn. I've been taking yoga for instruction on how to control my breathing in general; so what else do you learn? Thank you so much in advance for all opinions!! Chat Icon

I don't think so! I got a video that helped, I forget what it's called but everyone on here recommended it. It was like sitting in a class but in my living room. It was quick too! Chat Icon

I didn't do any and I don't regret it.
I didn't even watch the video.
When it came time to push the nurse asked me if i took a class- I said no. She gave me a 5 minute crash course in pushing.
Told me everything I needed to know and helped me practice the pushing.
Honestly, at that point, insticts took over and the nurse was very helpful in coaching.

Re: BTDT MOMS - Classes??

I took a Bradley class when I was prego with DS #1. I was very glad I did, just because I knew a little more about what to expect (not that you can really expect anything since anythign can happen!). It was a nice bonding time for me and DH, and it just helped me feel more at ease. I wanted to have a natural birth, so I felt like I wanted to be really informed, etc. I'm glad we did it.

HTH!

Same here.
I dont think they are necessary at all.

You push, that's all there is to it.

I didn't take them and my nurses said I was a "pro". They asked me where I took classes and I said "nowhere" Chat Icon

Re: BTDT MOMS - Classes??

I'm delivering at St. Charles also, and DH and I just took the Lamaze/childbirth class on 6/27. I thought it was great! Definitely not a necessity, but I think we both really benefited from hearing everything explained in detail, and even found out a few things we didn't know (esp about the hospital's policies and procedures which was helpful). Getting a tour of L&D was also great... it was nice to see what the rooms look like (their delivery rooms are surprisingly nice!!) and where we will be spending those very important few days. Chat Icon Like I said, not a necessity at all, but I would recommend the St. Charles class. The instructor was great... Christine something.

ETA: I know I'm not a BTDT mom, but since you mentioned St. Charles I thought it was ok to answer!
