Re: Brentwood SD
Flame me if you want, but not known as a good, or necessarily safe district - lots of gang problems.

Re: Brentwood SD
Brentwood grad here!! And I also teach adutl ESL for the district. I will admit that the school can be rough, but I will also tell you that the school has some great programs and if the kids have involved parents they can turn out okay. Brentwood has an awesome music dept and a great science olympiad team and there are many other things that people don't know about the district because they just believe what Newsday says.
Take it from me, good people can come out of Brentwood. My two best friends and I graduated together and one is a social worker, one a Spanish teacher and I am an ESL teacher (worked in publishing for 5 years before this)
I will admit that there are gangs but I learned that in Brentwood you need to find your niche and you will be okay. It is the kids with no direction who fall between the cracks!
This is based on my personal experiences with the town.

from what I hear the educational part is good. However they have a lot of gangs and it is not a safe place.

Re: Brentwood SD
I dont mean to offend anyone, and I dont want to start anything but, my dh and his 3 siblings and ex-wife and 5 guys he is still friends with all graduated from there. Only one went to college.
Also, I hear they do have gang problems. The best way is to do research online about this schoold district.

Re: Brentwood SD
I think for elementary school, you're fine. Brentwood gets a lot of grant money and has things that most schools in the wealthier districts don't. For example, there are laptops for every two children in some of the schools. Also, if your child is Spanish-speaking, they have wonderful bilingual programs there. As others have mentioned, it may not be the most desirable place to live bc of crime though.

Re: Brentwood SD
We have friends who work in the middle school as teachers who have alot of negative things to say about the district.

Re: Brentwood SD
I have 3 friends who graduated from there...they all turned out ok, but they all agree the school district is not that great. In any area deemed that way, the best thing to do is if you plan on staying, get involved. The more involved you are in the school, the better the experience your kids will have.

Re: Brentwood SD
Im currently only subbing in districts local to brentwood, so I only hear whats being said by others.
Although its a "rough" area, I hear that teachers LOOOOOVE working there. Ive met many many many teachers who have a brother, sister friend teaching there who absolutely LOOOVE it.
As far as the schools/students, Im sure it depends on the child, the family and how involved they are and how seriously they take their education.
Im sure we all know of grads of "rough" areas who turned out to be at the top, and grads of "top" schools who turned out to be..at the bottom (for lack of a better word).
Im bilingual (actually trilingual ) , so I def plan to apply to work there as soon as Im ready It takes us teachers (and parents) to beleive in these kids and help add more to the stats of those that turned out at the top
