Breastfeeding working moms

I will be going back to work in a couple of weeks....my ds will be just about 3 months and exclusively breastfeeding about every 3-4 hrs during the day. Wanted to see how much milk I should leave for my mother when she watches him? I'm not quite sure how much he takes when he feeds. Anyone else's experience would be helpful! Thanks!!

I had the exact same issue. The rule is leave 1-1.25 oz for every hour you are gone. I played with it a bit and started on the low end so as not to waste milk, but in the end my son takes two 3 oz bottles and one 3.5 oz bottle while I'm gone. I'm gone just over 8 hours and he takes 9.5 oz total. This works for us.

My advice, leave 1 oz for every hour you're gone (divided into however many bottles you need) and then leave a bit extra packaged separately just in case until you know how much he takes.

Hope that helps!

This is probably how ds worked it.

I gave my mom and mil a few packages of frozen in case they ran out. I pumped for the next day and also pumped on the weekends (am only) to get some extra for the stash.

Re: Breastfeeding working moms

I'm gone from 8-4 each day. I nurse her right before I leave and as soon as I get home. I leave 3 4oz bottles. Sometimes she takes 1, other days 2, but rarely 3. She would rather nurse than have a bottle, so she has adjusted her schedule to nurse more when I am home and go longer between feelings when I am gone.

when I first went back to work I think i left 5 bottles -- it was more than she needed but I was able to use the extras the next day. I was nervous there woudn't be enough. I would err on more vs less.

Start freezing some milk too so you have some in reserve. I pump 3x a day at work and then nurse when i get home. I always pump before bed (and extra session) and then after I feed DD in the am.

I always left 3 5 oz bottles. Babysitter usually just used 2 of them, but had the 3rd if there was an emergency. If the bottle was untouched, it was made into a bottle for the next day. I pumped exactly 15 oz a day (weird I know) over 2 or 3 sessions, so I didn't really freeze much, just packed what I pumped.
