Breastfeeding throughout the night
I'm wondering when babies start to sleep throughout the night without waking up to bfeed? DS2 wakes up literally every 2 hrs, he's 7 months now. Will this change soon?

Breastfeeding throughout the night
Dd2 is ebf and she was sleeping 8 hours through the night at 4 weeks, 10 hours through the night at 8 weeks. Now at 8 1/2 months she goes 11 hours.

DS has always been a great sleeper and was EBF for 13 months. Some kids just aren't good sleepers. A girlfriend of mine has an almost 2 year old and he still wakes a few times a night.
Good Luck

Breastfeeding throughout the night
Both my girls were a dream and sttn from 2 months to 4 months. After that, they both deteriorated. My oldest didn't sttn consistently until she weaned at 16 months. My younger one is 16 months now and was a terrible sleeper until recently. We did a little sleep training bc she had gotten worse and it helped (she was sleeping in the crib till 3am rather than being in our bed by 11 or 12) but she got sick and that has set us back again.

Breastfeeding throughout the night
My DS is 22 months and would nurse overnight every night if I let him. I don't let him unless he's sick, teething, or we're away from home (he hates the pnp). Many EBF babies nurse overnight until at least a year old.
Eta: at 6 months, we did CIO and it helped immensely although he frequently regresses due to teething/illness. He's sttn for the last two weeks and I'm like a new woman! Some kids are just bad sleepers.

DD was waking up at least twice a night at that point. She didn't STTN until 13 months

Re: Breastfeeding throughout the night
DS used to wake up every couple hours to nurse at night (he's 6 months). It turns out he was comfort nursing, so we used Ferber's method to sleep train him. Four days later, he learned how to self soothe and now he sleeps through the night. The first day was the hardest (for me), but it worked.

Breastfeeding throughout the night
I guess I'm just confused, he used to sleep through the night for the first month or so, like 7 hrs straight but then he started waking up more and more, and it hasn't changed since then. Can't really compare with my first son cause he was formula fed, and this one is ebfed. I'm so proud of bfeeding and I wouldn't trade it for nothing but the lack of sleep is hard ??

I don't think it has anything to do with ebf vs formula. Sounds like he doesn't know how to self soothe and get himself back to sleep. At 7/8 months they do not need the calories from night feedings and should be getting enough during the day.

Re: Breastfeeding throughout the night
Interesting!! I also read another article that says that babies wake up because the milk produced at night is richer and the quantity is more. It also has melatonin which helps them sleep?!? In a way it makes sense because DS falls back to sleep soon after nursing, the problem is that he wakes up again 2 to 3 hrs after that

Didn't even think self soothing could be the problem. I didn't really experience that with DS1. I'll have to look into that.

Have to agree that that's likely the issue. When we sleep trained dd2 bc she started fighting bedtime (along with the rest of the night) it helped with some of her motn wake ups. She would cry for a minute or two and then go back to sleep which she wouldn't do before.

I'm trying to find info about self soothing and caloric intake during nighttime for babies but I'm not coming up with anything

Re: Breastfeeding throughout the night
I'm also asking this question at some of my bfeeding groups in FB and a lot of them are saying it's totally normal, that there are other reasons babies waking up besides hunger, like wanting to cuddle, hot/cold, even as a natural mechanism to prevent sids, and supposedly self soothing comes later. Ahhhh we'll see what happens with this little one, hopefully he'll learn to love sleeping through the night soon

Re: Breastfeeding throughout the night
My son is almost 11 months old & wakes up during the night to breastfeed at least once, usually twice, around midnight then again around 4am, but sometimes different times. I don't think he needs the food because he's pretty big & eats a lot during the day... also for a time he did sleep through overnight, then starting waking up again around 4 or 5 months old.

This. At 7 months your baby should be eating enough food during the day. Typically, 7 month olds only drink/bf 4 times a day, plust 3 meals and snacks. So BFing every 2 hours at night is a sign that he doesn't know how to put himself back to sleep or you're rushing in without giving him a chance to fall back to sleep on his own.

Re: Breastfeeding throughout the night
every child is different. DD was EBF and sleeping entirely through the night by 11 weeks old. DS is now 13 weeks (EBF) and up all throughout the night.

Every baby is different. My DS was up every 2-4 hours until nine months. For a stretch every 1-2 hours. He was teething though and in pain. He cut 8 teeth by 9 months! One day he miraculously STTN and in his crib.

Same for me. If she wakes, I wait a few mins and she'll put herself back to sleep. When she was able to suck her thumb she self-soothed better, around 3 months.

Yes, my 3.5 yo still doesn't Stan consistently . but by around 3 or 4 months old she was starting to sleep about 5-6 hour stretches most nights before waking to BF.
