breast feeding questions
i have a few is it normal questions....
is it normal for your boobs to get hard/lumpy and then after a feed go to soft? i am assuming it is but i just want to make sure
is it normal for your boobs to hurt still? they are still sensitive to the touch, but when it is time for a feeding it still sometimes hurtswhen she first latches on or when something hits against my boobs
are your dc satisfied after a feeding? i don't think i am making enough milk for her because she almost always is still crying for more after feeding for 40+ minutes and can take a bottle

I'm definitely not "expert" on this topic but I will say YES YES and YES!!!
#1 tells me you may be getting engorged, (leading to issue #2) and if that's the case you may want to try to feed more frequently, which should shorten the length of time for each feeding?
You don't say how old DC is, but when mine was newborn he'd go about 2.5 hrs between feedings, and each one took about 30 minutes.
I also felt like he was still hungry but he went through a lot of diapers and was gaining weight at ped visits so he was doing ok....
THe site here that everyone recommended to me is www.kellymom.com, there's a ton of info there!
It sounds like what you're experiencing is all normal!!!

The first two things are absolutely normal! When your breasts are hard it is because they are full of milk. It also takes a while before your nipples get used to the sensation, but if it is painful when she latches it might not be a proper latch.
I wouldn't think that because she'll take a bottle after a 40 minutes feeding that she's still hungry. Also, you are making enough milk if your breasts are engorged. If she has the right amount of wet diapers a day it is not a concern. It might be that she needs something else to suck on. Does she take a pacifier? All of my kids needed the paci or they would try to use me as one.

wonderful site. everything you ever wanted or needed to know about nursing. I love this site and even after 11 months of nursing I still use it sometimes. They have a section on making sure the baby is latching properly. I would check that out. And she may be crying after for a few reasons. She may be tired since milk makes babies sleepy. She may just want the comfort of the nipple in her mouth. Good luck

My dd is 3 weeks tomorrow.
Yes there are plenty of wet diapers and she is gaining weight so I know she is getting nourished. I guess she is just a very hungry little girl! I was thinking maybe it is the latching on that we still don't have right. My boobs are just very sensitive, so I try to massage the lumps i feel out while she is feeding . I am so scared of getting mastitis. I do go for my 2 week followup tomorrow so I will be sure to ask my ob. thanks for your answers

I agree 100%!!!!!!
Especially about the marathon feedings! DS just needed a pacifier & that helped that problem!!

i was thinking that too, bc after a formula feeding she will cry and i will put her on the breast and after a few sucks she is asleep. the pinky she isnt too fond of

My ds was litterally on my boob for 1.5 hours of every 2 hours. I was told after 20 minutes they are just comfort nursing but he really wanted the boob so I let him have it. Ds had a poor latch too so it bacame quite painful. With the help of kelly mom I got the latch right and used All purpose nipple ointment to get mt nips healed. I did not think I would make it but we are almost to the one year mark and he is still nursing like a champ. We did however introduce a pacifier at about 2 months. He will only take the Soothie brand ones. So that is always an option. If you are using a bottle anyway you really don't need to worry about nipple confision. Just make sure to feed dd when she is hungry. With ds it was every 1.5-2 hours. After try giving her the pacifer to suck on. I was very anti pacifier but it was a real life saver. I don't think I would have made it being the human binkie.
