Breast feeding moms
I'm about to give birth and I plan to BF is there anything I need to do to prepare? I feel like this sounds like such a dumb question. I have my breast pump and supplies all ready. Have nursing tanks and bra and pads. Do I need nipple cream? I BF my first but only for a few weeks. I would nurse and then pump after every nursing session to build a supply. Is this ok? I can't remember anything with it being almost four and a half years ago.

Sounds like you are all prepared!
My dd had latching problems so I needed the nipple cream and also nipple shields. My milk also didn't come in fast enough so I needed to give a little formula after my night feedings so perhaps have some on hand just in case.

I would definitely get some lanolin cream. I put it on after every feeding in the beginning and never had any pain at all. I also used my nursing cover a lot in the beginning. Not a necessity but I love my camelbak water bottles. I'd never drink enough water without them! Personally I didn't pump in the first 2 months, it's not necessary but if you want a freezer stash then go for it.
Other than that, maybe just read up on the early days to refresh your memory. I loved the book Breastfeeding Made Simple but you could also just check out the info on kellymom.com about the beginning days and weeks.

You will DEF need nipple cream... I don't think I would have made it without it!
Sounds like you have everything else that you would need. Do you have a boppy or my brest friend? I used a boppy and it was great.

Thanks for the replies ladies! With the nipple cream should I apply it after every feeding? I remember I had cracked, bleeding nipples with my first. My goodness the pain!!

From my experience, the way I'm going to prepare for next time is by having resources on hand from the get go. LLL leader info, LC info, kellymom.com on my phone and hook up with some BFing FB groups. Use your resources. I will also get a cheap manual hand pump, nipple shield, and extra pump supplies. Maybe I'm a bit extreme, but we had serious issues which now that I'm more informed is my motivation for making it work for next time. Good luck mama! Oh also a carrier to nurse in so I can be hands free, esp w my DS.

ITA! Utilize the LC's at the hospital. They're free and are such a valuable resource. Kellymom is also has so much information and I used to visit the site for tips and suggestions all the time.
Definitely pick up some Lanolin cream (coconut oil is also a great alternative). Apply after feedings. You don't have to wash it off before nursing again.
I used to pump immediately after feedings also to build up my supply and start a freezer stash but that's completely up to you.

Lanolin and Coconut oil, boppy / breast friend, nursing bras and nursing cover. I was told by my lactation consultant that pumping in the beginning isn't the best. You want your body to build up your supply based on what your baby needs. You will start to make way too much and end up engorged. I am pretty sure I also read that in my LLL book. I didn't start pumping until about 2 weeks before I went back to work and that was just to get my freezer stash started.
