Breast Feeding Class

Happy New Year ladies Chat Icon

Ok sooo I was going to attend a breast feeding class at Good Sam but am questioning whether it is necessary or not. Has anyone taken these classes or not taken these classes? Do you think it is absolutely necessary?

Also, has anyone ever breastfed while taking Nexium and thyrpid meds? I was told it is safe but just curious..

Thank you all for your help Chat Icon
IDK what I would do without it.

Re: Breast Feeding Class

I didn't take a class, but wish I had. I was so clueless those first weeks and it was miserable. I would also recommend finding out if your hospital or one nearby has a free support group for after your LO is born, I can't even explain how helpful it was for me.

Re: Breast Feeding Class

I wasn't going to but my OB highly recommended it. The way she put it to me was "better to learn this stuff now instead of trying to learn it while you have a screaming baby stressing you out". So I think I'm going to take the class at Good Sam. I realized I will have no clue what I'm doing so it's probably for the best.

Re: Breast Feeding Class

I was signed up, but didn't get a chance to attend before ds #1 was born since he was over 2 weeks early. I wound up taking the class while at Good Sam the day after he was born & I have to say it was totally worth it. I'd definitely recommend taking it.

Also, he was the only guy there but I asked dh to come with me & he did. It may seem silly, but it gave him a better understanding of what was going on & helped him to help me on the more difficult days in the beginning. He shared educated thoughts/advice that kept me going & it was so helpful. Had he not taken the class it prob would have been annoying Chat Icon

Re: Breast Feeding Class

The only class we took was for breastfeeding and I am SO glad we did! I ended up BFing for 14 months and it is partly due to the info and encouragement I got from that class..I say sign up if it is something you really want to do. The more prepared you are the better.

The class I took was over 2 weeks and I only took the first class. Honestly, I asked about weaning the baby to formula when I go back to work and I felt like I had committed a crime so I didn't go back for week two. The instructor was very nice but a little too hard-core with regard to BF for my liking. I would recommend just asking for the lactation specialist to visit you on the ward. She's a great help and the real-life one-on-one experience is much better.

Re: Breast Feeding Class

As far as the meds go, I don't know.

But, I took a bf class at my hospital in Chicago and am very happy I did. It gave me the knowledge of a newborn's digestive system and nutrional needs that in turn gave me the confidence to know what my baby needed. My DD lost a whole pound in her first two days of life and the Dr was quick to say supplement with formula. But, I knew that she didn't need anymore than she was getting and she wasn't jaundiced so she didn't need to be peeing and pooping extra. On the third day my milk came in and I met with a lactation consultant. I won't say it was easy, but my DD was exclusively fed breastmilk for 7 months. Now, at 3.5 yrs old, she is so healthy and has never been on an antibiotic. I do attribute some of this to the bf.

Re: Breast Feeding Class

I took 2 classes at the hospital after giving birth & had not only the nurses, but 2 lactation consultants & my ped WATCH me breastfeed in the hospital.

It was priceless. Def. the only thing that really helped me (besides pain meds) early on. I did have to supplement with formula for about a week & do repeat visits with my ped for feeding issues...

My kid still eats like a BEAR at 16 months, so in retrospect.... it was great to have people to guide you as in what to do when your kid BF for 3 HOURS STRAIGHT!
