Breast feeding Made Simple by Mohrbacher and Kendell-Tackett. I haven't put it to use yet, but I have enjoyed reading it so far.

Same for me. This book was recommended to me by several people, including one of the post partum nurses at Lenox Hill.

Don't know if any book can truly prepare or help you. But in my experience determination on Bfeeding was what kept me going! It's def. not an easy thing, but if you stick to it, it will be an amazing experience!

Agree. It takes a lot of will power. It is very challenging at times but totally worth it and ironically, the easiest thing.

Agreed. I read so much and had 3 lactaction consultants come to the house, and after 2 weeks I finally learned that the only way DD would latch (at first) was if I was standing in my kitchen!!! No book could ever tell you that!!!

I didn't read a book or take a class. Like a PP said determination kept me going too. The first few weeks were really tuff but now it's so easy. I'm so happy I didn't give up.

I did watch a video babycenter.com which helped me.

Good luck

i know that breast feeding is one of those things you learn more by doing than reading about. but im more concerned about the beginning. like how often and for how long do i breastfeed? how do i know how much the baby is getting? how do i know they are getting enough?

The book recommended (Breastfeeding Made Simple) will really help with those questions. I found it much more helpful than the class I took. I was also surprised to read that pediatricians don't really have training in BFing so they aren't much help and many seem more comfortable with bottle feeding. It's a good idea to be prepared and have a good understanding of how your body works and what to expect. I would also suggest having a LC's number ready if you need it.

You are going to feel like the baby is always on your boob! They nurse for a long time. I would nurse anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. When they wake from a nap, diaper is changed, and they are crying, usually means hungry and you nurse. You will be able to tell when they are drinking and just pacifying themselves. If they are on for a while and fall asleep, put them down for a nap. DS would feed usually every 2-3 hours intially.

You don't know how much they are getting. The only time I knew was when I had a lc at my house and we weighed DS before and after he nursed. also, didn't at the drs office once too. Weighed him and then nursed while we were waiting for the nurse to coming with vaccine and then weighed him again. As long as baby is wetting diapers, pooping, and gaining weight..they are getting enough. Also, DS only pooped once every 5 days for a while. Their stomachs are small. So don't stress about how much they are getting. That's one of the best things about breast feeding. They get what they need and won't over eat.
