brac analysis
Went to the gyno and she wants to give me the brac analysis to check for the gene of breast or ovvarian cancer because both gma had. She told me to not ttc until we hear the results.  because if comes up positive she wold have tl send me to other doctors. This sucks I guess im out this month... and maybe the tarot reader was right

Well mom just told me that this isn't just a normal test that I really need to think abojt it because do I really want to know that at some time in my life I will have breast cancer and if this comes out postive will I remove breast for preventive... she said that u can either have breast cancer now or in 40 years.... and if it is positive I will be stressed for my life about when is the day I will get it... has anyone done this test and what do you feel??

I have not personally done this test but my cousin has since her mom had breast cancer. She and her sister both carry the gene. Her sister opted to have a double mastectomy and hysterectomy while my cousin had the hyst(she was done with having children ). Last year she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. She fought it and is cancer free. She is only 43. I am not trying to scare you but I would rather know personally. There is no guarantee either way in life. It is a personal choice and only you can decide if it is best for you to find out or not. I wish you luck!! I'm sorry you even have to contemplate this

I haven't had any experience myself with the BRCA1 & BRCA2 genetic tests, but, I do women's imaging and I know of patients who have gone through it. It is a very personal decision and something to really think about. I know patients who have decided not to have the test bc they don't think they could handle results. I know patients who have done the test and either they opt for surg or they just make sure they get their screenings done regularly and aggressively (mammo, breast sono, and breast MRI) and always do their monthly self exams. It is a very personal decision. I will tell you what I did (my mom had breast cancer multiple times). I did the testing. The way I looked at it was if the tests came back that I had the gene, it would give me the knowledge that I'd need to force me to get regular breast ultrasounds/mammos in order to detect a problem at the earliest possible stage. Nobody LIKES mammos. Would i have had one at my age (33) if there wasn't a family history? Probably not. But I have. Despite the BRAC coming back negative. If I knew I had the gene, I'd be even more vigilant.

Hi crashing but I want to tell you that my mom passed away from breast cancer. My sister and I have been getting mammos and sonos since we were 30 years old. I have had two kids as welll as my sis and none of my doctors ever told me to get this test done. They asked if i ever had it done and i said no told them my personal reasons why and iit was never mentioned again. I wish you luck in whatever you decide. Fm me if you want to ask me any ?'s

Well this is the thing I am 27 years old and no kids but we are trying. My doctor said I should stop trying until I do the test if I want to do it.

What is your family history exactly and the ages they were diagnosed? Breast? Ovarian? Your Dr give you any other options?

Dad side his mother and his gma 54 years old. My mom side her mother 68 her grandma 84. All with Breast Cancer. Dr didnt really talk to much about it just that she thinks that since I am jewish and high risk I should take it and then go from there. She really didnt tell me what we would have to do after beside going to other doctors and to not try this month until after. I just dno if I want to not try this month because of this test. If I even take it I am still thinking

I am far from an expert on this subject, but I met with a genetic counselor 3 weeks ago who told me that not all breast cancer is genetic. A lot depends on the age of onset. If this is true, I wouldnt be too concerned about your mothers side because they were older, but your dad's side was a little younger.
Whether or not you do the test or TTC this month is totally your choice, just make sure you have all the facts before making a decision.

If you are of Ashkenazi decent, that does put you at a higher risk. Dads side doesn't matter as much bc it is rarely genetic from dads side. It's moms side they worry about more. If the relative got it postmenapausal, the chances of it being genetic are less. Not to say they don't worry if anyone in the family develops it, but, the most worrisome is if a first degree relative develops breast cancer premenopausal. In which case you should start screening 10yrs before they are diagnosed.
Wether you wait to ttc or start while pursuing this is your own personal decision. Maybe make an appointment with a breast specialist or a genetic counselor in the mean time?

This is EXACTLY what my doctor told me as well as my sister (who is an OB and did her thesis paper on genetics and breast cancer).
As for the test, my mom asked me and my sisters if we wanted to get it done. My mom was 51 years old when she was diagnosed and we are of Ashkenazi descent. My mom's was actually hiding behind 3 cysts so she wouldn't have felt them and they didn't come up in mammos. Her cysts were hurting and when they drained them they found the tumors hiding behind the cysts. I talked it over with my DH before making a decision. He of course told me it was my final decision but it was good to talk it out with someone. We/I decided that I didn't want to know. I didn't want to sit around and wait to see if anything was going to happen to me. I do checks on myself once a month in the shower to just make sure I don't feel anything and my doctor checks me out at my annual visit. I speak up when something hurts or feels weird. I will go for my annual mammos when the time has come. I am currently pregnant and still check myself and often ask the doctor to check when I go for my prenatal appts.
It is ultimately your decision. I am comfortable with following up with doctors and not having to sit and worry if the test came back positive. I didn't want to get a mast yet as I want to try to breast feed so the worrying would have put me over the edge. Try to sit and think about what you would do if the test came back positive. If it comes back negative, that also doesn't mean you will never get breast cancer so you still have the risk, it just means it isn't genetic.
