Bottle Question - Nighttime Related
so on the night time bottle thread a few days back - many of us said we still give the bottle at night, before bed....
sincerely - all forms of answers are appreciated - don't worry about offending...
what is the problem with doing that? if the child is going to bed with a bottle, but we remove it when she's asleep (we do in our house)....is there really any harm to that? i know we need to get rid of bottles - but that one right before bed - is there a medical/growth/dental/developmental reason that it has to go??
i'm just curious - it's been on my mind - as i've been dreading taking that one away and i got to wondering WHY it's so bad....
thoughts??

Re: Bottle Question - Nighttime Related
I think it's because if milk sits on their teeth for that long overnight, it causes tooth decay. I'm guilty of it here, too.
Sometimes I'm able to brush her teeth with the fingertip toothbrush when she's already asleep; otherwise, I try to do it post-bottle/pre-binkie right before she goes off.

Re: Bottle Question - Nighttime Related
My son is only 9 months so I haven't dealt with this, but, like the PP said, I have heard about the tooth decay issue as well. I also think it might have something to do with not being able to self-soothe. If they always use the bottle to fall asleep, they don't learn how to soothe themselves to sleep- which is supposed to be really good for developing self-esteem and independence.

My ped. said so long as they aren't literally falling asleep with it, then it isn't an issue (i.e. it's the same thing as a final sippy before going into the crib). He also did not stress going off of the bottle, and feels that my DS might skip over sippies of milk to go to cups from bottles.
I'm convinced he won't start kindergarten while still getting bottles.

Tooth thing is a big problem with doing that. My ped always told me to wipe the teeth if she is having a bottle to fall asleep.
Luckily Sadie rarely ever feel asleep with a bottle so it was never an issue for us.
I would give her a bottle around 6/630 and she was always in bed by 7.
