Bootlegged Amazon Fire Sticks
What do you think about them?
Where do you get one?
Anyone feel funny about using it? Who is the one doing the illegal part?

I have one. Kinda kicking myself for paying $100 for it. It works great and honestly, its just a stupid hack and its not really illegal. You can look up the videos on how to install the programs yourself on youtube and it takes like 15 mins tops. I did one for my sister and one for her BF too. Super easy.

Re: Bootlegged Amazon Fire Sticks
I don't love my firestick. It works great for movies on demand, but most of the "in theater" movies are horrible bootleg copies.
I would never pay anyone to jailbreak it. You tube has all the info you need
Honestly we don't use it that much at all.

We have one. DH did it himself. My friends are obsessed with theirs but I think its just ok. I've been using an app for newly released movies for over a year so maybe thats why I'm not super impressed.

I love mine. We bought it initially to hack to watch a UFC fight. We now watch it for everything.

I think it's good. Some in theater movie qualities are better than others... what I don't like is having to type everything in the search (if I try to speak into the mic, it sends me to the pay movies). I've also been having a little trouble with streams being available and having to try multiple servers. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? No clue...

Re: Bootlegged Amazon Fire Sticks
we have the fire stick and the fire box. we prefer the box.
SO went to the internet and did it himself. it took him a few days to decide which apps he wanted. we did test a few apps out. he's streamlined it now and if he programs a new one, it takes him about 15 minutes.
we have the two i mentioned. DS has a stick, my sister has a stick and a box, SO's kids each have one... all programmed by SO.
we also have a digital antenna for local channels... mostly for local news.
we're set.

Is there a reason why he prefers the box over the stick? I want to get the stick to easily move it between TVs. But if it is vastly inferior maybe ill get the box.

Re: Bootlegged Amazon Fire Sticks
Thanks! I wonder if Amazon will catch on and not allow the sticks to be hacked anymore?
Also who is ultimately losing and winning for this free stuff (shows/movies)?!
I already cut $30 to Verizon each month and would stop going to the movies.

I'm pretty sure amazon is aware of the issue - I've known about it for well over a year and I'm not even tech savvy.
The people who are hurt by this include everyone who works in the entertainment industry including the behind the scenes people. I would assume it affects profits which then affects everyone's job/pay.

Watching bootlegged movies is illegal. The people who suffer, as a PP mentioned, is everyone involved with the production of the movie. The typical movie goer is affected as well because it causes ticket prices to go up in order to compensate for the decreased attendance in a theater.
Having the software is not illegal. Using the software is. Remember years ago when everyone used Limewire for their music - same concept.

The software has been around for along time. Kodi has an app for your phone and you can watch on your computer. the stick has just made it easier to watch on TVs now.
So yes it is illegal but it has been around forever and nothing new. Just a new way to get the movies.

It is not illegal because you are simply streaming the content, not downloading it. Limewire/napster was actually downloading songs to a hardrive. The fire stick just streams the movies, therefore it is technically not illegal...yet.

i asked him and he said that the box has a bigger memory (for a bigger build... more apps) and that every once in a while the stick buffers, where the box won't.
my $0.02... it doesn't make a difference unless you want to watch live tv; like a sports event.

Where do you even get a regular fire stick now? Every store is out of stock and Amazon is backordered!

Maybe people are buying them in large quantities to doctor them and sell. I know one person who was doing this

Re: Bootlegged Amazon Fire Sticks
I just jailbroke my firestick over the weekend. Saturday and sunday I watched all the oscar nominated films that I had not seen in the theater. It took me about 15 minutes to jailbreak and did it step by step by following a youtube video. i have not encountered any issues and am not bothered by the quality of the movies that are brand new. There is nothing illegal about jailbreaking a firestick. You are just downloading an app (kodi) and an addon for Kodi (basically an app within an app) that allows you to stream the bootlegged movies. Since you are not downloading (and therefore in possession of counterfit/pirated materials) it is not illegal. While not illegal it comes down to a morality issue. We have encountered some streaming issues with older films (my son has been watching old Pokemon movies) but I told him the free and he shouldnt complain.

there is some thought of being wired is better for less buffering but its a similar experience for some providers trying to stay on a stream.
Depending on your HDMI (especially wall mounted) then can be a pain to move. I brought and jailbroke a few so I don't have to move.

We recently got a fire stick and my dh easily jailbroke it himself. We cancelled our cable subscription and haven't missed it at all. We are able to watch everything we would want to watch thru the fire stick.
