Block Parties

I am considering organizing one for my street and I've never done this before. Any tips on where to start? I know I have to get signatures from everyone on my street and I emailed the town about location (we are on the feeder street to our entire neighborhood, so I'm sure there are limits to which part of the street we can close). How do you determine dates, etc.? Do you just pick a date or do you get input from your neighbors, town, etc.?

we have one on my block every year. There is a form that the TOH has for the signatures and whatnot, and I believe my neighbor had picked two dates early on and told all of us. We all just went with the date that worked best for the majority. Then, she got a DJ quote and we all split that and one or two other things amongst all the neighbors. We luckily have a good block, and alot of the elderly neighbors who didn't partake still offered to pay to help.
