Birthday traditions

My son is approaching 1 and it got me thinking about birthday traditions. When I was younger my mother would make a handmade birthday sign that she would write a whole long passage on. What are some other traditions?

Re: Birthday traditions

my birthday is near easter...my mom would always bake me a cake in the shape of a bunny. i realize that's specific, but maybe if your (or someone else's) LO's bday was close to a holiday this might give some sort of idea for something similar.

Re: Birthday traditions

I started doing something this year that I plan to do until they get married & move out. DD turned two a few weeks ago. The night before her birthday I stayed up and decorated the entire inside of the house. Tons of balloons, streamers, paper lanterns, decorative cut outs, the works. When she woke up in the morning, she was so excited by all of it. I can't wait to do every year as she gets older, and when we have another dc. I know eventually when they are teenagers they will groan but I don't care.

DD isn't one yet, but I plan on decorating her room.

so far, my dd is only 1 but---my dh and i will take off work & we will take her someplace special on her bday...when she turned 1 we took her to the aquarium. not sure where we will take her yet this year...and she will get a really fancy cake each year!!

i would like to do a few more traditions so i can't wait to see what others respond to this thread! :)

Re: Birthday traditions

My mom use to buy me a girl figurine with #1 for first birthday, figurine with #2 for second birthday and so on kind of like precious moments dolls. I have all the way up to 16th birthday. I plan to collect those for my girls.

Re: Birthday traditions

My mom would decorate the kitchen with balloons, signs and streamers and would always make chocolate chip muffins for breakfast.

She did this until I moved out of the house at 25! lol
