My mom is overly generous but we don't like that either because she doesn't have a lot of money & has to bust her arse to make a few hundred dollars. She usually gets DH clothes & sometimes gift cards.
We don't exchange gifts with my Dad anymore.
My MIL doesn't have a lot of money either & she's older but she always sends me something pretty & I really appreciate the effort.

I wouldn't be offened, my parents give scratch off tickets and a card for birthdays  . But I also kinda see birthday presents as a thing for kids. DH and I will buy gifts for each other, but don't expect anything from friends/family.

No, it wouldn't annoy me - I feel like once you are at a certain age it's not a big deal...my MIL always sends me a $25 check for my b-day even before we were married...my Mom usually gives DH a home depot gift card or something like that...
