birth plan?

Do you have one or are you writing one up? I have no idea where to start but was reading about them last night.

Re: birth plan?

Not writing one up.

My plan is simple - get the kid out as safely as possible. If that means "beaming" him/her out, then that's the plan.

DH and I do plan to take a childbirth class as I would like to experience all we can as parents to be. I'd like to think I have a high threshold for pain, but I feel that I do not need to be a hero. I have already been through too much. I need to be as calm as humanly possible to keep my child safe. I am already prone to anxiety.

It would be wonderful to make this process as "natural" as I can, but again, I have one focus - my child's safety and my health to keep him/her safe. If that means hooking me up to each and every monitor possible, then so be it. If it means its more clinical than personal, then so be it. I am blessed to have coverage for and access to excellent medcal care and honestly, I am too freaked out to take chances.

I am not quite sure if I am going to be able to deliver naturally because of my cervical stenosis. I was told by more than one doc that the cervix on stenotic women DOES soften up enough to allow for a vaginal delivery, but ya know, I don't want to labor for 16+ hours only to have a c-section anyway.

The only real concern I have is pain management. I do not recover well from anesthesia.

Re: birth plan?

I think if you have strong feelings about something you should put it down on paper.

I asked my MD if I should be doing one and she laughed and said, "Please don't", but then again, I'm trying to just go in with the mindset that whatever will be, will be. I'm trying to trust that my MD will do whatever necessary to avoid a c-section but that she knows best.

While I don't want a c-section, I feel like a lot of the women that swear they'll never have one end up with one b/c they are trying to control the situation too much.

I actually am a little afraid of the epi, so I hope I can labor at home as long as possible and then just push that kid out - but I'm sure this is a lofty goal.

Re: birth plan?

I'm using this as a guideline. It seems to cover everything.

Re: birth plan?

Get baby out. That is my birth plan, whatever happens before that in order to reach that goal is at the discretion of me, DH and the doc. I have learned that I have NO control over the way my body acts and I don't plan on getting my hopes up for one type of delivery only to have them come crashing down during the process.

Re: birth plan?

I am busting over on this board for a little bit.

I highly recommend a birth plan. I understand the safest way to get the baby out, but there's a lot in between to cover that you should write down and DH should know and be able to reference it. When you are in the thick of it, you may not be able to speak for yourself.

Pain meds? What kind of pain meds? Pain management? If you are able, do you want the freedom to move around (no monitors)? So many things...

I said that I didn't want an epi and DH knew that. When I broke down and wanted one, I was ineligible (due to platelet problem). I didn't know my alternatives and they gave me some med that knocked me between contrax but didn't keep me from feeling them. That was worse than the contractions. They dosed me several times and I couldn't protest. It was like I was very drunk. DH didn't know what to do, he was scared that I was in so much pain and scared that I couldn't even respond to him.

Anyway, I will have a detailed birth plan for my next baby with room for flexibility.

Re: birth plan?

I wrote one up for my first and it was very helpful to go over with my doctors and their staff prior to labor and delivery. I brought it with me and familiarized my DH with it as well for just in case issues. This time around I am writing a brief one up for DH and the dr. to have on hand if I am unable to make decisions at the time.
