BFing two years and period has not returned...

Asking for a friend.

Her son will be 2 in March, she EBF and never pumped, she is a SAHM so EBF was always easily accessible...

Now at almost 2 he BF's a lot less but still wants it in the morning..and sometimes other times in the day.

Her period has not returned--her ob gyn said she has never heard of this--so basically I am looking for anyone who has had this happen...

OB said she has follicles but her lining is very thin...

Anyone with similar experience please talk to me about how this might effect her having another child..thanks so much

I BF'd for 2 years but got my period back at 13 or 14 mo. I'm pretty sure I read on Kellymom.com that some women do have to totally stop BF to have their fertility return, although it's not super common. I would tell your friend to look at that site if she hasn't already, they have a lot of great info.

I EBF (SAHM) and DD BFd 3 times a day until 18 months and 2xs a day until she was 2. I got my period back at 6 months.

I agree with Pp that I remember reading some women have to completely ween to get it back. I can't believe her Dr has no knowledge about this!! I think she should def look into resources for BF moms like Kellymom, or even contacting the La Leche League to see what they say in the matter.

"This Milk Matters" is a FB group that posts members questions for other women to help out. Maybe she could try something like that?

I basically had to fast track weaning DD bc I wanted to get AF back. At a year she was nursing 3x a day and sometimes during the night. I dropped her down to twice a day around 13 months and then once a day at 14-15 months. I figured I may have to fully wean but I got AF when DD was 15 months and still nursing once a day although I did end up weaning at 16 months. My OB did mention that I may have to fully wean and that even then it may take a few months. Maybe she can try to limit it to just mornings for a while and see if that does the trick.

I would tell her to get a second opinion about this from an RE. She may need to stop BF completely for it to return. But this might be related to secondary IF. She may need to take something to help her jump start her period again. The fact that her OBGYN has "never heard of this before" is incredibly alarming to me. I would look for a new obgyn who has heard of this and dealt with this issue before.

My mom BFed my sister and me each for 2 years. She did not get AF until we were completely weaned. (We're 3 years apart. She weaned me at 2 and was PG with my sister 3 months later.)

I extended BFed with both DC. I got AF back in the 1st year. However, I also pump and I have read that it's not the same on your hormones and that AF can return sooner.

A lot of times when I tell Drs I am still BFing, they are surprised. It's possible that her Dr hasn't know very many women who BF for ~ 2 years.

1st time around my period didn't come back for 2 years (nice break)

2nd DC around it came back before 2 years.


Am sure she is fine
