BFed babies going to cups

At DSs 1 yr. check up he dropped off the charts weight wise, one of the things my PED said was to make sure he gets 16 oz of milk per day.

Up until this point he hasn't used sippy cups much, he just wasn't interested so I didn't push it. I did give him a little water in a regular cup after every meal (with me holding it).

I have been trying to get him to use the sippy cups so I can give him milk and he seems to just want to chew on it; he does have 4 teeth coming in, so I know that is part of it. I have tried advent with and without the valve - most of the milk that ends up in his mouth he spits out. I have tried the sippy cups with a straw, I have even tried giving him a bottle and really all he wants to do is chew it. When he does try to suck on it I can see that he is sticking his tongue way out as if he were nursing.

Are there certain cups that work better for breastfed babies? How long did it take for your DC to get used to the cup?

TIA!

DS does the same exactl thing! And I introduced the sippy cup at around 6 months. He just doesn't know what to do with it! But he will drink form a regular cup with no problem!! The only thing is I have to hold it. My take is that maybe they're not ready for a sippy cup. Give it some more time. I think its more important for them to eat then to learn how to drink from a sippy cup so soon after their 1st bday.

Re: BFed babies going to cups

I started DD on these sippy cups...

She never took a bottle so this was a whole new thing for her. I *think* I started just keeping one around when she was 6 or 7 months.

I would just let her play with it to get used to it. Some people suggested to me to let her play with it it the bathtub Chat Icon <---- what I did. But they said it was an old wives tale! So I tried it. She kind of figured it out!

I didn't push it, I let her figure it out on her own. By the time she was 7 months she was drinking water from it just fine.....

then we moved on to straw cups soon after.

I end up transferring the milk to a regular cup after awhile, just so he'll drink some. I was starting to wonder if he just won't use a sippy cup at all! I kinda hope that isn't the case, they seem so convenient!

Thanks, those look a lot softer. I'll give them a try.

Thanks for the bathtub tip - it is a funny idea but it will certainly help contain any mess Chat Icon

I have the Nuby cups and my DS just bites the nipple (and they seem to leak the water). I am going to try the bathtub trick though!!Chat Icon

Re: BFed babies going to cups

we are going through the same exact think and I was actually going to post this question. I have tried several sippy cups and the ones that Chloe likes best are the nuby ones that were posted. They are very soft.

She is just about 11 months and ped gave me the ok to start introducing milk a few weeks early because she is starting daycare in 3 weeks. I started this past monday giving milk in the sippy at lunch time instead of water. She does drink a little more than she did of the water, but not enough - I think.

My DH says "if she's thirsty, she will drink" I guess I believe this, but I still worry.

Im gong to try the bathtub thing!

Anyone else have tips?

Re: BFed babies going to cups

both of my kids would ONLY transition to the Born Free cups. Once they got used to those, I was able to introduce other cups.

Re: BFed babies going to cups

DS has no problem drinking water from a sippy cup, but he refuses to drink milk from it. He'll take a sip and then spit it out. We started transitioning him to cow's milk 2 weeks ago. Right now, I'm giving him warmed up milk in a bottle. I'd rather have him drink the milk in a bottle than try to force him to take it in a sippy cup. I hope to move to a sippy cup soon. He does fine with water in the Munchkin and Nuby cups.

Re: BFed babies going to cups

ds preferred the softer sippys as well, but depending on your child go for the munchkin ones NOT the nuby ones.. ds destroyed every nuby cup we have ever had because he sticks his finger in the spout... really we have gone through6 of them.... the munchkin ones are alittle more durable
