BF and food you can't eat
My BF class isn't until next month but I have been going crazy wondering this.....during your pregnany there is a list of foods you can't eat. Do we have to follow that list when you are breastfeeding also. I know you really can't drink - that doesn't bother me. How about sushi? I was telling my DH that I wanted a platter of sushi & sashimi the day I give birth and my SIL said it was a no-no - is that true? I hope not!

Re: BF and food you can't eat
I was told that you most certainly can eat sushi when BFing, just can't drink (unless you pump & dump). I already placed my order with one of my friends so she is not to show up at the hospital without momma's sushi!

Re: BF and food you can't eat
I don't eat sushi, so I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure you CAN eat it while breastfeeding, that there are no restrictions on what you can eat while breastfeeding...deli meats, feta, etc are all ok. Again, never really paid attention to the sushi thing, but I really think it's fine.

Re: BF and food you can't eat
I nursed DD#1 for nine months and the only issue with food is spicy food can sometimes effect the baby. The baby can actually get an upset belly if things are too spicey or acidy. And no alcohol unless you pump and dump. For me there was nothing major that I cut out at all.

Right there with you on the sushi - I think I will go nuts if I can't have it during BF. I don't care so much about the drinking. . . Its the sushi I miss!

I can't believe how many people care more about sushi than about drinking. I am a lonely alcoholic here I guess.

I told DH we need to pack a Miller Chill in my hospital bag. I want one (or two or more) so badly.

No you are not! I am right there with you!
I can't wait to have a glass of Santa Margerherita!
I do plan on BF so I know I will have to pump and dump, but I do plan on having a glass of wine every once in while.

Re: BF and food you can't eat
pretty much the only restrictions you have is what your baby can or can't tolerate. I find if I have too much veggies in 1 day, DD gets horrible gas.
As for the alcohol - my doctor said no more than 1 drink, a minimum of 1 hour before BFing/pumping. That gives the alcohol enough time to dissipate in your system. If I know I will be going somewhere where alcohol is served, I time my drinking and pumping around that.

I was way more concerned about the drinking!
As for sushi, at the class at North Shore she told us NO RAW FISH. so, i would assume you could eat any of the rolls that do not have raw fish.

I'm right there with you!!
In fact MIL was sweet enough to buy me a bottle of really expensive red wine for right after I have the baby (did I mention she is the best MIL EVER!)
And I read that the whole pump and dump thing is a little misunderstood.
You can drink, but whether you can BF or not is determined by the amount of alcohol currently in your system.
I think the rule is - if you feel a bit tipsy or drunk, the alcohol is in your system and will be in your breastmilk.
You can pump before you drink to have a reserve if you plan on getting wasted and need to feed the baby during the time you would be drunk but if you drank the night before, and not to the extent that the alcohol is still in your system, no need to pump and dump.
I've heard 1-2 drinks a week is fine.
Trust me, I've been reading up a lot on this issue!!

Re: BF and food you can't eat
I've had to watch the spicy, the garlicky, gassy (broccoli, beans etc.) and cut out all dairy from my diet. DD had a milk protein allergy
You just basically have to watch how your baby reacts to see what's affecting them. A lot of the time, nothing will affect them!
Watch peanuts and peanut butter.

Re: BF and food you can't eat
You pretty much have to eat just like during your pregnancy.
Limit spicy, gassy or acidic food. You cannot drink alcohol or you will need to pump and dump. Limit chocolate due to caffeine. So no coffee either. If a food type bothers you, it will bother the baby too.
Again I was told to eat the same as when I was PG. And you need to take your prenatals while BFing.

Re: BF and food you can't eat
I ate everything I wanted when I BF DD, I only stayed away from very spicy foods and peppers since the gas would bother her. In my BF books it says you can't eat whatever.

Re: BF and food you can't eat
I ate whatever I wanted while I was BFing, well that is until we suspected that my DS had a milk allergy. I never noticed that he was bothered by spicy or gassy foods so I ate whatever I wanted. The only thing I watched out for was alcohol and caffeine. And you don't have to pump and dump! That's such a waste of BM!! Well, obviously if you get completely trashed you wouldn't go and BF your baby, but as long as you allow yourself 1 hour per drink for the alcohol to get out of your blood you can still BF.

Re: BF and food you can't eat
You can eat whatever you want while breastfeeding -- some babies might be sensitive to spicy foords, mine's not.
You can also drink in moderation while breastfeeding and there is no need to pump and dump. The rule is as long as you are sober enough to drive you are sober enough to breastfeed.
