BF and drinking alcohol

What are the instructions your ped gave you or what do you do regarding having alcohol when you're BF?

BF and drinking alcohol

The first time I drank wine I DRANK, so I pumped and dumped. But the basic rule of thumb I went by was no need to pump and dump but wait until you can no longer feel the effects of the alcohol (i.e.- sober enough to drive legally). Regardless, the amount of alcohol that actually reaches the breast milk is so so so teeny tiny.

There are testing sticks to test the breast milk. Buybuy baby has them. Or look on amazon or bru.

Re: BF and drinking alcohol

From my own "research" I found that your baby only receives a very very low amount of alcohol when drinking. Not that you should get drunk, but if you're ok to drive you're ok to nurse (more or less!)

Sober enough to drive, milk is fine. Never pump and dump.

Totally agree...if you can drive you can nurse. I don't recommend the alcohol strips. Just go by how you feel.

ITA!

With DD I bought those strips because I was EPing, and after glass of wine, I would check, 10, 30, and then an hour later and then at the 2 hour mark, and it would be negative. I did that for like a month, and then stopped. I never drank enough to make that strip positive.. and if that strip was positive, I'd be passed out drunk somewhere.. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon pumping would have been the last thing on my mind.

YES. I regret the couple of times I pumped and dumped early on. I really didn't need to in retrospect, and I only had 2 drinks over the span of 5 hours! DD was a newborn so I was nervous. Now, I go by the same rule that everyone has mentioned - if I can drive, I can nurse.

This is exactly what my dd pediatrician said...as long as you do not feel drunk you are OK to nurse.
