Best Way To Pack Apple Slices - update

So someone just texted me that DS needs to bring in apple slices tomorrow - red, green and yellow.

When we aren't eating sliced apples immediately, I typically buy the pre-sliced ones but, I don't think they are available in yellow.

How do I keep them from getting brown? I have to pack them tomorrow at 6am and he probably won't eat them until 2-ish... I tried lemon juice once with these banana ghosts I made and DS 1 told me it made them taste funny.

Thanks!

Update

So the apples were really due tomorrow (long story) so they came back home. They looked awesome 12 hrs later after salt and vacuum sealer. They were in a lunchbox with an ice pack all day.

Re: Best Way To Pack Apple Slices

Add a little citrus juice like orange/pineapple/lemon. The citric acid keeps it from turning brown.

Soaking them in salt water works really well. About 1/8 tsp in a small bowl of water, let them soak about 5 minutes, and then rinse them off.

Re: Best Way To Pack Apple Slices

soaking them in any juice i found altered the taste.

Best Ive tried is soaking the slices in sprite for 3-5 minutes (no they wont taste like sprite i promise). Take them out and pat them dry with a paper towel and put them in ziploc bags, but try and suck most of the air out before sealing. Store with an ice pack.

the best option is to seal them with a food vacuum sealer - but not everyone has one of those.

Ha! There you go. I dont think you would even have to soak them then since there wont be any air in the bag.

Best Way To Pack Apple Slices

Will he refuse to eat them if they're brown? I send apple slices almost every day and they get a little brown but my DD doesn't care.

Re: Best Way To Pack Apple Slices

What do they use on the pre packaged slices that they don't brown, but the taste isn't changed?

Always was curious about that.

Spray them with a citrus/water mixture, then put them back together - like in the shape of an apple, and put a rubberband around it

This is all fascinating! Dd doesn't like the packaged ones (there is a slight flavor to them) and doesn't like skins and can't eat around the skins. Never thought to use the vacuum sealer!

I went to McDonald's and they have skinless apples....I bought a few for lunchbox! They do come in the package though....the taste to them is from the abscorbic acid they put on them (vitamin c), but I find they don't taste much different than when I slice them

My supermarket - ShopRite - carries skinless apple slices too. I’ve been buying them. They are either DelMonte or Chiquita.

Thank you everyone. Going to try the salt and the Food Saver - because I can’t send in the whole apple.

Stupid question but how would the kid open it? I can see with a one time thing for a project like the OP but i can't see teachers or aides having to cut the bags open daily.

I was worried about the same but figured the teacher is helping them open things for lunch and snack all the time. Since I had to pack them at 6am for a 2pm snack I figured that would work the best.

So the salt water does work well - I brought the leftovers to work (I just put mine in a Ziploc because I didn't have time to vacuum seal.

Thanks for the suggestions!

This is awesome! I am going to have to try this and see how it works. They don't taste salty? So weird and cool! Also, how did they look for you being just in a ziploc after a while?

Think I'll give it a go this weekend just to see if I can get away with it before I try sending any to school in my picky kid's lunchbox Chat Icon

The first time I tried the salt we had some that didn't get eaten and had been in a Ziploc all day. Dd1 had those and I sliced a fresh apple for the rest of us and hers looked better and still tasted fresh. I guess bc it's such a small amount of salt and you rinse it off you don't taste it at all.

Yeah - you don't taste it. The lemon juice is more powerful of a taste.

I was just amazed at how good they looked when I pulled them out of the lunchbox after 12 hrs (since DH didn't empty it when they got home from school and he was at work in the morning).

Yay! I am way more excited about this than I probably should be, lol, but my son loves peeled apples... this would be so convenient! I can't wait to try it!!! Thank you!

Wow...even after 12 hours?! I was going to wait until the weekend to try it just in case it didn't work out right, but I'm convinced... I have a ton of apples at home already, so I am actually going to try this tonight for tomorrow's lunch.

I vacuum sealed them as well. So they weren't exposed to air.
