Jenn, Its funny you mentioned the Massapequa drug problem. I also heard that Massapequa has drug issues in the HS. I went to MHS, but only heard about it in college b/c my sociology prof. mentioned it. I had NO CLUE that there was a big drug problem while in school. I knew of a few kids who did drugs, but more that didn't. Idk, maybe I was sheltered lol. I think it depends a lot on the individual kids and their upbringing.
We moved here specifically b/c of the distance to my in-laws AND the SD.
I hate that it's a problem. It's everywhere though - you're right.

Re: Best Neighborhood...
I'm furious at you all for giving me such great info! I thought I had a couple of options -- now I have about 10 new neighborhoods to look into!
Seriously, thanks -- there are so many towns to check out and consider...looks like I've got a lot more research to do.
Oh well, it'll be fun exploring...

Re: Best Neighborhood...
I live in Babylon Village and it has everything you are looking for. I love living here. My husband commutes to the city and it's about an hour ride.

Commack or Kings Park. KP has a train station and the town is small and close to the beach and surrounded by Commack, Smithtown and Northport. I love it here closing on a house this month.

Thanks for the suggestions! We really don't know LI that well so we're fishing around in the dark.
Someone suggested Greenlawn to me...how's that town?
If you live in Greenlawn you're either going to Harborfields or John Glenn (I went there) There are parts of Greenlawn that aren't great. The village in Greenlawn isn't anything special-if you're looking for the village aspect of it, I'd go for Huntington or Cold Spring Harbor.
I think Greenlawn is great 5 min from Huntington express train; less than 10 minutes from Huntington village and restaurants galore and great schools. Plus Greenlawn village has some decent restaurants and an ordinance that fast food cannot operate.
You can't touch CSH for under 800K and you don't want to be in Huntington schools.
FYI - the "not great" parts are actually not Greenlawn, but Huntington, unless you are talking about the Elwood side.

Re: Best Neighborhood...
hands down Floral Park Village...it is a small town with such a quaint feeling..I grew up here and just bought a house..the school district is great..it's close to the LIRR and ur commute to NYC is only about 30-40 minutes by train... Take a drive through the village and u will love it too..any questions feel free to fm... you can find a decent house for 450 but they are usually a little more expensive
good luck!

I am in Oceanside and we are so close to everything. Sometimes I can do all my errands in less than an hour without leaving the town. There is a great deal of shopping (Gap, Express, nine west outlet, nike, tjmax, marshalls, kohls, ect..) There are many restaurants and Long Beach is not far - where there is even more shopping, restaurants and the beach. Where I am, the train is in walking distance maybe 8 blocks away (and we rarely hear it). I have a CVS, 7-11 and post office basically up the block. The schools are very good.
We love the location. It is a bit out of the way to drive into the city because the parkways are not close by, but it isn't really that bad. I commute to queens 5 days a week.
Also, Massapequa Park is a great location. My parents live there, they have a town area that they decorate for xmas and do a tree lighting, lots of shopping (burlington, babies r us, pier 1, sports authority, and the Mall etc..) and lots of places to eat. The school is also very good and the train is close by.
we're in oceanside as well and I agree with the poster...it's a nice commute, everything close by!
I also agree.. I grew up in Oceanside and bought my house here back in '05. I am thrilled to be raising my family in this town!

Re: Best Neighborhood...
Babylon is great and so is Ronkonkoma. Both are major train stations. I commute everyday to the city and have a 6 month old. Babylon had more frequent trains but now we own a beautiful new house in Ronkonkoma right next to the lake and 5 min from the train. It really is a beautiful area. I would love a commuting buddy!!!

Unfortunately, at least for now, my husband is the one who'll be doing the commuting...so, don't take this the wrong way, but I do NOT want you to be his "commuting buddy"!
I'm thinking about Babylon...what's the difference between Babylon and Babylon Village?

Thanks for the tip. I guess I wasn't thinking about being that close to Queens...but I should check it out.
I'll take you up on that offer if I have any questions about Floral Park Village...thanks!
