Beach vacation
Friends and I are planning a vacation for later this summer, three families, children aged toddler to teen.
We are looking for a beach vacation where we can:
rent a home or two (as opposed to hotel/motel).
be on or very close to beach, we are all beach bums!
We would love a beach where we can build a bonfire in the evening
Boardwalk/amusements close by
laid back vibe, family atmosphere
prefer to drive (and not fly there)
Does our perfect vacation spot exist??
TIA!

Re: Beach vacation
North Myrtle Beach (Cherry Grove area) might be what you are looking for. My family has rented houses on or across the street from the beack through Elliott Rentals and never had an issue. All attractions, restaurants, shops, amusement parks, shows are near by. North Myrtle Beach is much more laid back than Myrtle Beach and you are still close enough to see all the attractions.
The only thing you might not be able to do on the beach is build a bonfire. You would have to look into getting a permit or local rules for that.
It takes between 11-13hrs to get there depending on traffic/stopping.

Re: Beach vacation
Outer Banks, NC sounds perfect except no boardwalk.
I did it four times and had awesome houses and spectacular ocean views each time!

Re: Beach vacation
We always go to the Jersey shore (Lavalette area) every year with DH's immediate and extended family (cousins, aunts/uncles, etc.). We rent a 3 bedroom beach bungalow right on the beach.
In our whole intergenerational group, the age range runs from babies to people in their 70s, and everyone enjoys it (teenagers, 30/40 somethings, etc.). Aside from the beach itself, the kids like the amusement parks (Seaside or Jenkin's Pier/Point Pleasant), mini golf, walking for ice cream, etc. We bring kites and all sorts of sports equipment. My 5 year old loves it there (has gone every year since he's been born).
It's very relaxing and family oriented. The beach community where we stay sometimes has live music on the beach on a Friday or Saturday night, organized volleyball games, etc. If somebody wanted more nightlife, they could go to the Seaside area.
Don't think you can build a bonfire on the beach, though. I think most places would have restrictions on that.
My friend goes to Cape Cod every year (rents a house with friends on the beach). I've only been to Cape Cod once, and we stayed in a hotel, but I don't know if there's as much to do there for the kids (in terms of boardwalk, amusement parks, etc.). But she loves it!

Beach vacation
Thanks for all of the great suggestions! I'm off to research some of these ideas.
LOL, the bonfire request came from my teenage nieces...I promised them I'd include it on our wish list :)
