here's something to consider

by tattooing brooklyn on your body, you're advertising where you are from

brooklyn or more importantly NY

if you travel OOS, not everyone likes NYers, and you may be harrassed

I always try not to advertise anything about myself.

who cares if people know where you're from. that's the point of being proud of where you're from is. You can't compare a town on long island being tattooed on you (i.e. westbury, etc) with brooklyn. I wanna get a long island tattoo, not a coram tattoo where i was born and raised. i say go for it, but I personally would think that the tattoo would look dumb anywhere other than your wrist. on your lower back, it would look ridiculous and unfinished.

i know you said it's a concern of yours cause of the industry you're in, however there is makeup for it and you could always cover it for the weddings, etc. it won't be that big that it would be difficult or annoying.. just something to think about.

I've traveled all over the country (and a lot of the world) for both work and pleasure and I've never been harassed b/c I was a New Yorker (or an American, for that matter). I've found that the way you are treated by people in other parts of the country and the world has a lot less to do with where you are from and a lot more to do with how you carry yourself.

people always seem to get a kick out of the fact I was from ny. I've never had anyone discriminate against me b/c I was from ny.

yeah, i'm not so sure it's where you're from that matters as it's how you act that does.

And If That Isn't A True Blue Miracle

Re: Be honest...will I be a "tool" for getting a tattoo...

maybe i'm speaking from personal experience so I will clarify

I am from Howard Beach, which if some of you recall, has been associated for some racial hate crimes in the last 20 years.

So, Howard Beach is associated with racism.

Anytime someone asks me what part of NY I am from, I say Queens, or Ozone Park. The times I have said Howard Beach, I have been treated to glares, asked where my bat and slice of pizza is, and eyerolls.

Another example - New Englanders and New Yorkers have a bit of a rivalry.

I've worn a New York hat in New England and gotten comments. I've been denied access to a club in Boston because my driver's license said New York.

So, I stand by my opinion that some people hate NY, and I'm not about to advertise anything about my name or where I am from.

And to the comment that you get judged by how you act - if I'm in another town - I generally keep to myself and don't cause a spectacle.

Re: Be honest...will I be a "tool" for getting a tattoo...

I wanted my butterfly on my wrist. DH begged me not to do it there. I wanted to be able to look at it whenever I wanted, not when I lift my leg up on the table, or when shaving my legs. I didn't get it on the wrist because he was so adamant about not wanting me to get it there. I still think about it though.

There are still days (6months later) I look at my leg and go "oh yeah, I got a tattoo" and enjoy it all over again. And to answer Kimmie, Even with one tattoo, I get judged. I can only imagine the stares you get.

I made the comment, though it wasn't directed specifically to you but instead the general masses.

My experience has shown those who act like a jerk in public are then judged as one.

As for the bar scenario - sounds to me like you ran into an azz of a bouncer. It happens. I've been to Boston before and never been denied entry b/c of being from NY. I'm guessing you were better off anyway as who would want to be around such shallow minded people anyway.

I personally wouldn't do it. It would be like tattooing BAYPORT on me. But like another poster said if you feel that strongly about it. . . then do it.

No offense, but I would hardly compare Bayport with Brooklyn. Name 10 famous anythings from Bayport.

They have a really nice floral houseChat Icon

(I bought my bushes thereChat Icon )

I wasn't thinking along the lines of famous.
BUT Bayport is famous for train suicides
