Batteries... How do you dispose them?

I didnt even realize, until a coworker mentioned to me how i was destroying the environment by tossing them in the garbage. Do they go in the recycle bin? I have no clue how to dispose of them.

Thanks!

Re: Batteries... How do you dispose them?

Well..

I bring them to our town's toxic STOP drop off program.

But...where we live, we are instructed to throw them in the regular garbage, as opposed to rechargeable batteries, paint, etc.

So I always find it odd that we are instructed to throw them in the regular garbage.

Re: Batteries... How do you dispose them?

Our town will take them in a plastic ziploc bag when they take bottles & cans. We need to leave them on top.

I believe its ok b/c some towns actually have sorters(people who pick through the garbage)

I wonder this, too. I know rechargable batteries can go to radio shack or circuit city (?), but regular ones, I'm unsure.

So you mean they go t hrough the garbage bags? I doubt that, honestly, that's like finding a needle in a haystack. We are instructed to throw the batteries in our regular garbage, not with recycling.

Luckily, my company has some containers throughout the building for old batteries. I can just bring them in and dump them there.

Ok I am wrong!

I just looked on the STOP website for TOH and it says Household batteries are collected!http://www.townofhempstead.org/content/cs/stop.html

So I have been doing the right thing all along. I also have to check where I live's sanitation pamphlet b/c I could swear we are told to throw them out with regular garbage.

You are welcome. I keep my stuff in a pile in my garage until the next date comes and also a little spot in my pantry where I keep this stuff. I have aerosol cans, batteries (even small watch batteries), cell phone batteries, nail polish, etc, stored and waiting to go.

They also have an ecycling program where you can bring old vcrs, tvs, comps, etc. I go to that as well. I have a printer that I will hang on to for mths until the next one comes along.

My library collects them. They have a special bin that the town picks up on occasion. I'd recommend giving your local library a call too Chat Icon

WE bring them to the STOP collections once we've gotten a few saved up.
