Baptism frustration
DH and I contacted the church where we were married and they said that we have to attend 3 two hour sessions in order for us to baptize the baby at the church. I think that this is a little overkill! When we got married we just had to go up there for a short time and meet with the priest to make sure all of our paperwork was in order. So frustrating! I feel like we are so crunched for time and having to spend that much time in classes seems like a lot.

does your church want a sizable donation like my church does? I'm so ready to go the non-traditional route...

I left a message wit the priest today to find out about the "donation." But, I am anticipating that it isn't much of a "donation"

Re: Baptism frustration
cr@p, you made me check this up on my church's website... and we're ALSO expected to go through some cheesy baptismal preparation class....
what's with this BS? I know for a fact my parents never had to do the pre-cana.... they ESPECIALLY didn't have to do a baptismal class...
why is the chuch so high maintenance these days?????? ugh.

Re: Baptism frustration
I went to the class at my church and it was only one hour. DH couldn't go and they said that was alright, as long as one of us is here.

Re: Baptism frustration
This type of preparation class is fairly standard.
The thinking behind it is that, much like getting married in the church, many people baptize because they feel they are expected to, not because their hearts are especially into raising a catholic/christian kid. The classes seek to familiarize (mostly non-church going) couples with the meaning of baptism.
We were active in our church, and still had to attend the classes. They were surprisingly enjoyable, actually, informal, and we met a lot of other nice couples with young families like ours.
As far as a donation goes, they need to cover cost of your baby's baptismal candle and baptismal garment. Most churches ask for $50 or under.

Re: Baptism frustration
I didn't inquire about this yet at my church. I guess this is what we have to look forward to.

Re: Baptism frustration
I spoke to my mom about this...and well guess what i found out. She and my dad signed up to help teach the Baptism classes at there church.!!!!. HA!!! My parents are Holy Rollers for the past 5 or so years. So i guess it is common in most churches. In my moms church the classes are done with family members who have raised Catholic children and teach them and help support them. That was how my pre cana classes were also. I bet my DH's old church does the same thing. We have not decided a church yet (to find one where we now live in Babylon) or go back to Wantagh to the church we got married in and where DH is from. But its looks common across the board!!!

Re: Baptism frustration
For my first DS, we didn't have to do this. But I called yesterday to schedule he date for DS#2 and learned the same thing We have to meet with them for an interview (meanwhile, we were married there, my DH went to catholic school there and my son was baptized there). Then we have to meet with another couple from the church and watch a video on baptism. Then we have another meeting after that. I seriously don't have time for this
