Re: Banking blood cord
People have different opinions on this topic. We banked DS's cord blood with ViaCord and we will be doing the same with this DC. God forbid we needed it down the line and we didn't bank it I would regret it forever and never forgive myself. Hopefully we will never use it. I think it is well worth the money but that is just my opinion.

Re: Banking blood cord
We are CONSTANTY having this conversation. I completely feel the same way you do. The finance aspect of it! However, every time I hear of a new disease (or injury) it may help to cure, it makes me want to do it more... we are also considering donating the cord blood.

Re: Banking blood cord
Our friend's ds was diagnosed with leukemia when I was pregnant with #1, so we never wanted to be put in the situation of what if.
OB said Viacord and CBR are the big ones and either is fine. He also said the less expensive ones were fine since if they go out of business, viacord or cbr buys them up.
We went with CBR for #1 & 2 and will for #3.

We are going back and forth, and one of the reasons is that I hear that you cannot use the baby's own cord blood for a number of diseases, including leukemia. Is that incorrect?
I hear that it is likely a better match for a parent or potentially another sibling. We are IF grads though and who knows if we'll be able to have another baby.
Right now we are leaning towards public donation.

The leukemia diagnosis was just our wake up call. We never wanted to say we should have. There are some diseases that cannot use the same blood (I think genetic ) but they are constantly researching more - like spinal cord injuries.
My MW compared the initial fee to a year of car insurance. When he did that it put it in perspective. I pay for that every year and don't expect to use it. Why wouldn't I do that one time for my child.

Re: Banking blood cord
we are still on the fence about this. i'm leaning more towards donating it because you can still have access to it or someone elses, if i'm not mistaken.
my doctor didn't give an opinion one way or the other really. he said if you can afford it then go for it, but it's an expensive decision that is not always guaranteed. he also said there is a chance that your baby's blood might not be available if you god forbid need it because someone else could always pay top dollar to take it if it's a match. obviously thats not always the case, but something to think about too.

Re: Banking blood cord
I would prefer to donate it, but it seems not many hospitals on LI participate in public donation.

Re: Banking blood cord
We did it and we used ViaCord. We both felt it was kinda like an "insurance" policy for our sons health.
We both have had family members who had issues as babies, and their illnesses could have been helped by cord blood , however that wasnt an option back in the day.
