Bamboo
Anyone plant this and regret it? Or love it? My parents (years ago and unknowingly) planted bamboo. It ended up being very fast growing and invasive, but it's gorgeous. They have a lot of land so neighbors are not close by.
Does anyone have it? Do you regret planting it?

DO NOT PLANT BAMBOO! My best friend recently purchased a house and the previous owners had planted bamboo in their backyard as a "barrier" between neighbors. Well, it took off like wildfire and spread everywhere -- even places it was not planted. My friend wanted it gone and rightfully so. The roots were so incredibly strong that the foundation of the house was compromised. It took an 8 man landscaping crew 7 days to get rid of the bamboo, roots and all. Oh and did I mention close to $17000. In the meantime, to get all the roots, her fence AND deck had to be taken down in the process!!! Yikes!!!

Re: Bamboo
Don't do it!! I actually think they banned it in certain location on LI. Someone a few blocks from me has it in there yard and it took over the WHOLE backyard. I recently drove past the house and almost didn't recognize it because they cut it down or ripped it out and I couldn't believe how big there yard was.

Re: Bamboo
It's now banned in the Town of Huntington.
DH's ex planted it at his old house. He had to dig up the roots and cement over the area and put dirt on top... nightmare!

NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!
..... did I mention NO! ?.....
It is banned in several towns, and more towns are looking to pass the ban. We've had bamboo in our yard for 15 years, and I've tried everything to get rid of it. It travels underground and pops in areas that it wasn't near. All I can do now is keep it at bay, but I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. I've got shoots all over the yard. I think the previous owners thought it would be a good barrier between my house and the neighbor or something....

I love bamboo. I remember wanting to plant it when we moved into our house. Then I read up on it. It's now banned in several Long Island towns. I still love the look and DH and I compromised by putting some in planters.

Yeah I'm def not planting it - but I wish I could! It's so lush and tropical looking.
Maybe if I had a few acres and it wasn't banned, but such is not the case

Planers are a good idea! Maybe I will do that.

There are over a thousand different species of bamboo, too. The kind we have hibernates in the winter, so the stalks dry up and look horrible each fall, so there is a lot of cleanup of just the discarded stalks. They aren't sturdy stalks, either, so I can't use them for anything but starting fires in my fire pit.....

That's interesting. My parents have the kind that is lush year round. It looks like a rain forest in one area.. But a nice one!

Bamboo
We had about a dozen stalks in our yard when we bought. Neighbor has about 40. We were the only 2 houses with it. That was October. Now the neighbor behind us has 10 stalks. I go check ours everyday and about 3 weeks ago I walked over and there were about 15 shoots between 6-12 inches that came up over night. I have read everything there is to read about bamboo. I check for shoots everyday and kick them down. I get about 1 a week. I would never voluntarily put this in my yard. It's crazy and I have found shoots as far as 25 feet away from the rest.

Re: Bamboo
don't do it!
we paid $1500 to get it all pulled out about 2 months ago... I would say we had about 100 stalks. these people literally were there all day. Pulling it out. It seriously looked like a circulatory system.
fast forward to now, it's all growing back what is even worse it is growing in odd places.
I wish I could borrow a panda bear.

Re: Bamboo
I would also like to add in that if it spreads to your neighbors yards YOU can be held responsible for the removal and any damage it does. I believe town of brookhaven has either banned it or is in the process of banning it

Re: Bamboo
From Newsday. I read this yesterday. Didn't even know this, but now will stay away.
____________________________________
The Babylon Town board next month will take up a bill restricting invasive bamboo that could result in fines of $500 a day for property owners who let it spread beyond their yards. The bill comes in response to complaints from residents that Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said Tuesday were impassioned, if not widespread. "It's a big deal to those who have to suffer through it," he said. "[Bamboo] can affect the foundations of your home. It can be dangerous to children playing in the yard -- as the root system grows, sharp roots can grow up." Under the bill, certain kinds of clumping bamboo would have to be moved or trimmed to keep it at least 10 feet away from the property line, and any new bamboo would have to be confined to planters or behind barriers that stop the roots from spreading. The town would give offending bamboo owners a month to comply before issuing a summons. In cases where town property is "invaded" by bamboo, the town would take on the removal job itself after a month, and bill the property owner for costs. Gardeners sometimes use bamboo as a natural screen. But about a dozen municipalities on Long Island have passed restrictions on the plant since 2011. Malverne threatened up to 15 days in jail for violating its law. A state law passed last year prohibits the sale, possession or transportation of invasive species, giving the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Agriculture and Markets until this September to develop regulations and name regulated species. Bamboo is not currently on New York State's interim list of invasive plant species.
