Bad news re: my maternity leave

I started my job July 15, 2009. I got preggo in July (a bit of a surprise, we thought it would take longer).

My job offers 12 weeks paid maternity leave and 14 weeks unpaid bonding time.

Since i won't be working here for a year when Chat Icon arrives, I don't qualify for any of this. I qualify to take 6 week unpaid, but I will not have the FMLA protection which means if they need to, they can replace me while I'm on leave. That isn't even an issue, because we can't afford for me to be out 6 weeks without pay.

I had a feeling this would happen, but now I'm stressed. I now need to ask my manager if he will allow me to work from home for a while. Chat Icon I really really hope he says yes. I really hope this works out!

Girls, can you please spare a few prayers for me?

I'll be out for 12 weeks without pay. It's scary but we did it with DS and we'll make it work with DD too. You'll be okay. A friend of mine started working from home 3 weeks PP so she could get some income coming in. Good luck!!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Unfortunately this is standard as per the law, but it still sucks.

You are eligible for NYS disability for 6 or 8 weeks (6 if vaginal delivery, 8 if c/s). Unfortunately, it's only $170 per week.

If by chance you work in Jersey, the payout is MUCH higher. I can give you that info if you do work in Jersey.

Re: Bad news re: my maternity leave

They cannot replace you during those first 6 weeks-I'm not sure if that is what you meant in your post. But they could replace you the second 6 weeks if you decide to take the full 12 weeks, unprotected under FMLA.

I only had 6 weeks unpaid with my DS, and also this time. It is hard to do, but not the worst thing in the world (although I know it is hard to leave a new baby)Chat Icon

Many prayers Diana. If it makes you feel any better, I lost my job while preggers and my unemployment will run out. We can all come up with some ideas for each other! Chat Icon

Only if you are not covered under FMLA. If you fall under FMLA you are ok.
