Bad falling asleep habits

Do most of you have to rock your baby to sleep (naps included)? My son is 10 weeks old and will only fall asleep if we put him in a milk coma or by walking with him around the house until he passes out. Rocking him to sleep on the glider doesn't cut it. I also have tried his swing and bouncer. They don't work either. He wants us up and walking. I wouldn't mind but sometimes he has me walking for 45 minutes and I can't see myself doing that when I go back to work. How can I break this habit?

I should add that he was born 5.5 weeks early. Not sure if the fact he was premature makes a difference.

Bad falling asleep habits

I agree with the PP. My DS is 6.5 months and I still nurse him to sleep most of the time.

My son was like that too at 10 weeks. I was also worried about bad habits. Now he falls asleep on his own at 5 months. Do whatever he needs for now.

Yep

10w there are no habits to break.

Probably slept best when you were walking even before he was born.

Re: Bad falling asleep habits

There's no way to "spoil" a baby that young... do whatever makes him happy. I used to rock, hold, sway, kiss, etc. my son like crazy. All bets were off until at least like 3/4 months old. It was endless! And he never developed a single bad habit from it. He is now almost 15 months old and sleeps like a dream.

So, don't worry - do what soothes him and makes him happy. FYI - I did, personally, always change stuff up though. I never only rocked him or swayed, etc him the same way. I was always switching it up and rotating.

If he enjoyed the Mamaroo glider for a nap, I would then use the Rock-n-play, and then a different time something else. So, that way, over extended periods of time it wasn't always the same.exact.thing. If he loved being rocked, I would rock him on one side and then the other side, in different ways.

This way, I could spoil without having to worry that over weeks and months, he would become dependent on that one particular "thing".

I rocked DS to sleep for naps. It didn't end well. Eventually, they grow bigger and become too heavy for swings.

DD (DC #2) went into the crib from 8 weeks. We let her cry for a while & then she would fall asleep. Much better. I think it's easier to train kids young.

At 10 weeks DD was putting herself to sleep for naps although at night she still nursed to sleep a little longer. I think trying to get them used to it young is a good thing. That said, I believe if there are other issues like reflux or being a preemie that it may take them longer to feel secure enough to fall asleep on their own. I'd give it a little more time if he needs it but definitely keep trying. I didn't mind letting DD fuss for a few minutes to get her to fall asleep but if it escalated beyond very mild crying that I'd give up and try something else or try again later. She got the hang of putting herself pretty quickly.

Yes I did. At like 4 months I started trying to pay attention to putting her down drowsy but awake. And giving her a little time to try to get herself to sleep. Only now at 6M does she really do this consistently (as long as she is tired enough).

This exactly, im not exactly sure how or why we screwed up our older DD"s naps but she was an awful napper and once she outgrew the swing we had to lay down with her.. and night time though we always put her down drowsy and asleep and she was the easiest kid to put to sleep until age 2.. Now at 2 going on 3 she refuses to sleep alone for naps or at night so... so much for her good night sleeping habits.

BUT with younger DD.. she is 6 months old now and I did the same as NYCGIrl.. put her down drowsy but awake for all naps and night time and although she would cry a teeny bit she would fall asleep.. that was just her way of getting to sleep. Maybe shes just an easier kid than my older DD but I think its because of how we handled each situation. I also learned with number 2 to put her down in her crib before she was tired.. at that age .. I would not keep your LO up for more than 2 hours otherwise they get overtired

Exactly...they are too small too let cry to sleep. There were nights I just slept upright on the couch with him in my arms and pillows all around.

He will eventually figure it out on his own.

Also, you CANNOT spoil a baby that young...no way, no how. I don't care what anyone says...
