backyard that is all weeds
what do I do with a backyard full of weeds. The previous owners were, well, trashy and didnt maintain the back yard at all, its all weeds I dont even know where to start. I would like to eventually have a deck some nice grass and plantings. Should I rent a rotatiller ro something to get rid of the weeds? There are so many.

ugh, we have the same situation! beacause we are doing so much work to the interior right now, the backyard project has to wait until next year, but when we do it, we plan on taking everything out - getting a roto-tiller, and then either planting new grass seed or putting down sod, depending on our budget!

We had the same problem because of an old pool that we ripped down and then did all the inside projects first. We found an ad in the pennysaver for someone to rototill for cheaper then you can rent a rototill. Then we will have to rake it out and plant seed.

Re: backyard that is all weeds
We used the Scotts System. It is 4 parts, 1 in the summer, 1 in the fall, 1 in winter and then again in Spring. You wouldn't want to rototill and plant seed now because it is to hot. I would start with the Scotts Summerguard, then put the fresh seeds down in September and continue with the system. You can't fertizle and seed at the same time. Then in the Spring I would seed again.

Re: backyard that is all weeds
we had one section that was knee deep in weeds
I just pulled out as many as I could by hand. They I also used the scotts 4 step program like the person above said and fertilized and after about a year its all grass and looks great, you would never ever know that was all weeds.

a rotatiller is not going to kill the weeds. it will turn the soil, kill some (very few b/c they are very hardy) and then seeds buried deep into the soil will emerge and grow. you will actually then have more weeds. this time of year is not a good time to seed your yard. and summer is the worse time for grass b/c they can't compete with the weeds in heat.

do not rototill weeds. it will spread the seeds all over the place and you'll have weeds everywhere- if you cant pull them by hand or get someone else to pull them by hand then have them come through and weed burn that will kill the seeds so you dont have more weeds. unfortunately there is no easy answer for weeds. pulling them and bagging them is the best solution and will give you the fewest recroppings later.

Is this safe for animals though, we have 2 dogs and don't want to do anything that could potentially harm them, especially since one of them has bad skin already.

Re: backyard that is all weeds
I have to agree with not rototilling. This happened to us and we spent two weekends just pulling weeds. Get a good set of gardening gloves though to protect from blisters and poison ivy. Try to pull from the bottom of the stem - you need to get 3/4 of the root out to have it not grow back.

Re: backyard that is all weeds
Those Scott's programs are safe. They work good too. I want to start using organic stuff soon but the people at Hicks told me that you really have to use the chemical stuff (like Scotts) for the first year or two in a new house..if the lawn is in bad shape. So I did that. The lawn looks great and next year we will probably switch to organic.

The Scotts does work. We barely had any dandelions this year.
