Back from the gyno...His advice...

I paid my first visit to a new ob/gyn. I went off the pill last month, and I always thought the advice to wait a couple months was just to regulate your cycle. Well, he said there is a greater chance of miscarriage if you get PG within the first couple months of going off BCP. Chat Icon He didn't say much else of any interest, though he feels no need to start prenatals before getting PG so long as I get adequate folic acid in a multivitamin. He also said not to bother using OPK or temping until 4 months off the pill, or at least 2 months have regular, predictable period cycles. He said before then it is too erratic and a waste of time and money.

And he reminded me that the chance of getting PG each month, even with both partners in perfect health and BDing on all the best days, is 20%. It's just amazing that there are so many unwanted pregnancies with the statistics working against us! Chat Icon

Re: Back from the gyno...His advice...

your OBGYN has some very old information... most doctors no longer believe that the chance of miscarriage is greater when you first go off BCP.

and while his "stats" about only having a 20% chance of conceiving each month are technically correct... i don't know if i would feel comfortable with a doctor that holds such pessimistic views. i mean, its one thing to ask for advice if you think you are having trouble... it's another to tell you, in essence, not to hold your breath. that's just my take on it... feel free to ignore me Chat Icon best of luck to you!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Well, he meant it more like don't freak out if this doesn't happen right away; it takes time. this was my first visit with him, and i had a pretty long wait, so i dont know if i will stick with him. i wish you could try out/interview doctors without having to pay a copay!

Mine told me the same thing. He told us to wait a month (which I was going to do anyway). It worked out better anyway b/c my cycles were (and still are) kinda crazy. They're starting to become more regular now and it's been 5 months off BCP.

ahh, i see... that does make a big difference! it's all in the tone (which sadly gets lost here on the internet Chat Icon)

actually i am pretty sure you can! if you are not 100% happy with him, and are looking for a new one, when you call the new office speak with the office manager and see if they will schedule an interview for you.

ITA w/this! I know so many people who get pregnant immediately after coming off the pill and had healthy pregnancies (my sister is one of them).

One of the more common reasons they say you should wait is because it just makes it easier to date the pregnancy should you get pregnant right after. There really is no reason to wait.

Re: Back from the gyno...His advice...

i was never on BCP.. so i dont have much advice...

but as far as the doctor goes.. you have to be completely comfortable with him/her.. i would call other offices and talk to the receptionits about a consult.. you have to be sure, and not doubt your doctor... i had this problem too, and i finally switched..

I'm one of them too, and so far so good....so, you never know, it could happen. But, it was impossible for us to pin down a conception date so we didn't have an official due date until the 2nd sono, they did it by measurement. I do wish I knew what date "did it".

I actually got pregnant about 2 weeks after going off the pill... but it was an ectopic pregnancy. I don't have any reason to think that it was caused by my going off the pill recently though. I think everybody is different.

Re: Back from the gyno...His advice...

When I spoke to my doctor about coming off the pill and TTC, she originally said we could wait 3 months before TTC just so I could get an idea about my cycles (they were pretty irregular before the pill). Then, when I told her that it took my mom several years to have me and I was concerned about having similar fertility issues, she said we could start trying right away. My doctor said the only reason people are told to wait is to regulate their cycle and to get a better idea of when conception occurred.

We ended up TTC as soon as I stopped the pill and I got pregnant that month. My EDD was pushed back a week after my first sono, but other than that, everything has been fine. I've never heard anything about a higher rate of miscarraige being related to getting pregnant right after coming off the pill.

Re: Back from the gyno...His advice...

Sometimes docs tell us things just so we will not hold them accountable - liability thing. I was told my chances for conception each month at my age were 10% even with an unmedicated IUI (They only increase your chances by a percent or two without meds). If that were the case, then tell me why a 37 year old got PG 3 out of 5 possible times.

As far as I know, the information about miscarriage being higher is incorrect. What is the medical reasoning behind it?

It is as MrsRbk stated above - many doctors want you to wait a few months before coming off bcp so your cycles are more regular and the pregnancy can be dated with more ease.

Re: Back from the gyno...His advice...

My obgyn also told me not to temp or use opk's. she told me to have fun with it and try to BD every other day CD10-20. She also told me about the 20% chance and that most couples will conceive within 6 months.

tone of voice is so important. your doctor sounds so pessimistic even if he said similar information.

Re: Back from the gyno...His advice...

wow, i've never heard of miscarriage the first month off of BCP. that kind of scares me, but only because i just got off of BCP. my now 16 y.o. nephew was also conceived w/in the first 2 weeks his mom stopped BCPs, so it definitely can happen within the first month.

i hope everything works out for you!!
