Babysitters (HS age)
How old were your DC when you let a high school age kid babysit?

Re: Babysitters (HS age)
He was 6.
I know I am not the norm, but it was necessary. She got him from latchkey everyday and kept him for an hour or so until I got home.
He is very articulate, so if something was going on that shouldn't, he would have told me

Re: Babysitters (HS age)
Now that my kids are 5 and 2 i let my 17 year old niece babysit them. 6 months ago she would "babysit" but my mom was there.

Babysitters (HS age)
My son is 2.5 and we have a 16 year old watching him for the first time this Saturday. She lives less than one mile from us and has 3 younger siblings. I also know her mom well.
I watched infants when I was a teenager.

My kids were 6,5 and 1 when we used one - she even got my baby to nap in the crib. She was great.

OK these answers make me feel better I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy to think a high schooler (next door neighbor) could handle a toddler who was already in bed and STTN, especially with older kids home.

we started out with our next door neighbor (15 at the time) babysitting when he was about 4, and already asleep and we were local. Then, she did a few times where he was awake and she put him to bed. I know my kid and he's fairly easy and knows her, and we we do too, so i have no issues with it. There are several houses on our block where she could get immediate help if something were to happen as well

Re: Babysitters (HS age)
My main nighttime babysitters are a 28 or 20 year old, but my husbands business partner has a 15 year old that wanted to start babysitting. They live close by and she will watch them for a couple hours while we have dinner...her parents stay home just in case and she brings a friend. My kids are 9, 8, and 3.

Re: Babysitters (HS age)
We've used a middle school tween ( ) on our block a few times from the age of 1-3 years, but it's usually been after DC is in bed and very reliably STTN and we are only going out to dinner locally. I started babysitting at 12 and would babysit babies and be responsible for putting them to bed sometimes.

Re: Babysitters (HS age)
My boys are 7 and 5. We've only had teenage babysitters when DS was about 2.5. It was a boy around the block who was 16. He was a lifeguard over the summer, volunteered with kids, was a tutor, athlete, etc. I put my younger son to sleep when he came and he just played with my 2 year old. It wasn't ever longer than 2 - 3 hours most back then. When they were 2 and 4 he watched them for longer hours. Now my boys are older we've had the kids across the street watch them for an hour or so. She's 13.
Honestly, it depends on the kid. I know other kids 18 or even 20 and wouldn't trust them, but trust some 13 year old more.
ETA - we are lucky to live close to my parents and IL's so if we are doing an overnight or it's going to be a very late night bc we're at a wedding or far away we use them.

Babysitters (HS age)
My babysitter is a high school senior who lives 2 houses away from us. She's babysat my daughter numerous times starting from when she was about 14 months (she's 19 months now). Maybe I'm really lax, but I know that if anything happened, her mom is 3 minutes away and would come. DD goes to bed by 8pm so when we use her for date nights, she's really just with her for an hour or so and then puts her down for the night. When I was in high school, I babysat for my neighbors newborn/infant all the time. I think I started when I was a sophomore, so around 15?
