baby shower opinion - LONG
I'm not a big present party person - and neither is my DH. We don't have birthday parties/dinners/gatherings for ourselves or anything - not that there is anything wrong with anyone that does (including our great friends), it's just not our thing.
On top of that, showers are not a thing in my culture - although they are in DH's family as they are American (well, I was raised here, but some times I'm weirdly "old country").
Anyway, since showers aren't really part of our custom, but part of my DH's, my MIL threw me a bridal shower. My mom was okay with it, she said, but then she got really nasty about it. It was not a good experience and she was really mean to my MIL. After that, I have repeatedly said I don't want a baby shower b/c I never want to deal with the drama of my mom again (at least shower wise).
Well, years later I'm pregnant and some of my really good friends want to throw us a shower. I'm okay with it, as long as we don't involve the families at all. It would be really small and at a friend's house, just a few of my good friends who would have bought us stuff anyway.
DH thinks this is a bad idea and that the moms will freak out if they ever find out (which, they may not).
So after that looonnngg ridiculous explanation, I'm looking for opinions. Is a small (like 10 people at the most - all HS friends) shower (or party with presents) potentially offensive to the moms? Or would a - it was just a small friends thing be something I could get away with if they find out at all?
I kind of see it like a work shower, where family wouldn't be invited either....

i don't think that a gathering that small would be offensive to the moms, if they even found out, and i think it might be something you'd enjoy without the stress!

ITA. You get to celebrate baby without drama. I say go for it. You can always tell your mom it was a surprise after the fact

IMO... I woud be hurt if I was your MIL. I'm sure she didn't mean to cause any drama by hosting a bridal shower for you. If showers aren't part of your culture than don't have one at all. If you do have one even if it's a small one with friends I would at least extend the invite to your MIL (especially if this is her first grandchild).
