Re: baby in the room?

I'm delivering at Huntington and they were very specific about the baby being in the room all the time. The exception was viewing hours in the nursery and overnight when they bring the baby in for feedings.

When I delivered in June of 2006 - this was not the case.

Most of the day yes - but not all day

Depends on what hospital. In Mercy you did until it was visiting hours and the baby went back into the nursery.

Re: baby in the room?

I deliverd at Stony Brook, and if you want, you can have the baby in the room with you most of the time.

I had an ER C-section, and had so many issues with the pain management, that I hardly had my DS in my room (I was in horrible pain, and hallucinating on the pain meds...I'm allergic to all morphine derivatives).

I didn't want my DS in the room with me because of my condition. He was in there as long as my DH was there or another person. The nursery would let my DH go and get him and take him back whenever he wanted. They would also bring him in for me and take him back whenever I wanted.

The nurses were giving me a hard time, worried that I wasn't bonding to the baby because I didn't want him in my room all the time (meanwhile the MDs kept telling me to take advantage of the nursery and that when we get home, I'll have all the time in the world with the baby, and that I should focus on feeling better).

Some hospitals do this but I don't agree with it at all. I def do not want my newborn around all those strangers. And I think it is very unsafe but that's just me.

I delivered my DD at St. Charles. She was in my room most of the day. She went back to the Nursery during the evening visiting hour and at night. They brought her back to me in the morning Chat Icon

Re: baby in the room?

When I delivered here in NC, my dd was with us the entire time. We had a choice as to whether have her with us all the time or let her sleep in the nursery. We had her with us the whole time except for the last night, when she would not stop crying and the nurse suggested we let them bring her into the nursery so we could get some sleep....I loved having her near us the whole time Chat Icon

Re: baby in the room?

you should definitely be able to bring your baby back to the nursery during visiting hours if you are not comfortable with them being out.

they do have day time visiting hours - it is supposed to be sibling and grandparents hours - but I had everyone in my room - parents, brother, BIL, SIL, neices, nephews.
And the baby was in the room

At LIJ I had my son with me from 6am until I brought him back at night (usually around 8 or 9pm).

I don't know about your hospital, but mine only has the baby stay with you in the room plus they put baby lo-jack on you and the baby (security activated bands). The baby only leaves you once for hearing/blood test, but that's it for us here.

Re: baby in the room?

I'm not sure about most hospitals, but know when I visited my friend in Sept at St. Catherine of Sienna after work during the evening visiting hours, there were like 6 people in the room and the baby was there the whole time.

Hate to break it to you, but your visitors are likely to be very sad if the baby isn't there! They aren't coming just to see you.

In Winthrop they are with you from about 9am until visitin hours at 6pm. The baby comes back after visiting hours @ about 8:30pm. They take the baby around 10 or 11 and then give them back during the night for feedings.

My baby had the lo-jack too and the hospital had this thing where if someone tried to take the baby in the elevator without having the lo-jack removed, it would lock down the hospital

I agree with that

the baby has your immune system too after birth. I hope someone would know better than to come to the hospital if they were sick

Re: baby in the room?

My girlfriend and SIL both recently had babies at St Charles and the baby was in the nursery during regular visiting hours and it was not a choice. I think during grandparents visits they were out.

I am delivering at St. Catherines. They give you teh option, being that I am delivering in the winter, I am sending my baby back to the nursery during open visiting hours...too many people who have litte colds may stop by so I dont want to take a chance.

Re: baby in the room?

When I went on a tour recently of Huntington Hospital, I got the impression that moms are encouraged to have the baby in the room, but the baby can go to the nursery if that's what you prefer.

I could care less who people are coming to see, if I hear someone sneezing or know someone who won't respect our wishes re: slobbering on the baby comes to visit, in to the nursery he goes.

I am delivering at Winthrop, but I just visited a friend at North Shore and the baby was in the room with the parents even when the visitors were there. The mom can ask them to take the baby back to the nursery, but I think if you are breastfeeding, they will bring the baby every 2-3 hours for feedings.
