Baby has milk protein allergy and Im EBFing

Im so upset even though I know its not a HUGE deal...but I have to give her formula for 3 days to let all the milk protein get out of my system...Im not upset about giving her the formula, just hoping she will go back to my milk without any problems in 3 days.

I also have to cut dairy out of my diet, which is not that upsetting b/c Im sure it will help me to lose weight...

Anyone have experience with this??

yes, with both babies.

i would not stop nursing though. both my babies improved in 4 days.
just cut out dairy asap...imho-i would nurse-mine never had a drop of formula.

if in 2 weeks your baby is still having symptoms, take out soy as well.

good luck!

ITA with this. I did not put DS on formula, I just eliminated it from my diet immediately. He was better within a few days.

Thank you ladies! I REALLY dont want to stop nursing but the Ped said I had too, he said that the formula is better than my breast milk with the milk protein. I hate to go against what he said, so now Im really torn! Her stool tested positive for blood, and I dont want to hurt her with my milk, but the formula seems so gross and Im afraid she wont even take it!Chat Icon

We formula-fed, but I know a lot of women on here continued breast-feeding and just cut out dairy immediately. Your dc should improve over time. If you are committed to EBF, I would keep doing it.

Thank you! Im going to FF just until Monday night, and then go back to EBF...the ped said by then I should have less milk protein in my system, but that until then it is better to give her the Nutramigen...Im going to listen to him, although I may start looking for a new ped that may not have been so quick to tell me to stop BF.

Re: Baby has milk protein allergy and Im EBFing

I never listened to a single thing my ped ever told me re: nursing.
They just don't know or understand.

I found a LNP-she gave me the support and confidence needed to believe in nursing.

My ped sent me home with formula all the time. Pushed it on me all the time. Just ignored him and did what i thought was best.

there was no way i was going to risk losing my supply or having the baby not latch.

both my babies had blood in their stool...broken out faces-4 days was clear.

the thing with formula is that you don't know if it is going to constipate them as well since you are switching things up.

Thank you! Im going to try the formula (I gave her 1 bottle already), but if I run into ANY problems, Im going to BF...Im also pumping & dumping after every bottle feeding to keep my supply, and I plan to go back to EBF Monday...since I havent eaten dairy since yesterday afternoon...

Did you cut out ALL milk products (as in baked into products and anything with whey and casein), or just the obvious like milk, cheese, yogurt, pudding, ice cream....??

To answer your question above, I cut out all milk, not just the obvious. It took a lot of label reading in the beginning, but once you find a few go-to products/meals, it's not too bad.

Re: Baby has milk protein allergy and Im EBFing

any traces of milk and soy i would recommend giving up.

let everything clear, then reintroduce soy into your diet to see if baby can handle it.

most who have protein allergy have it to both.

Re: Baby has milk protein allergy and Im EBFing

Yes, my DD had a milk protein allergy. I EBFed her through the whole thing-I had to eliminate dairy, whey, casein, soy lecithin, soy, nuts, seafood, and eggs (until she was 5 months old). It is rough at first, but honestly, it gets easier with time. The plus is you lose a ton of weight! The diet is definitely doable. If you have questions, feel free to FM me! I still do the diet by choice as much as possible. The good news is the majority of babies outgrow this. My DD outgrew her allergy at 1 year.

Tons of things have dairy, but you figure out quickly what is safe.

I do a lot of shopping at Whole Foods and Wild by Nature. The less processed the item, the less likely it will have undesired ingredients.

And my favorite things-So Delicious Coconut Milk products (creamer, milk, ice cream, yogurt-all dairy free), Earths Balance soy free spread (in lieu of butter and really good!), Enjoy Life products (chocolate chips, cookies, snacks-all are allergen free), Life is Good Sprouted Bread

Re: Baby has milk protein allergy and Im EBFing

start with basics.
in the AM-smoothie. banana, 1 cup of frozen berries, 1 cup of choc almond milk.
delicious and filling.

lunch can be salad with chicken
pasta with veggies
if you have a TJs I found the best bread options there

dinner-meat, potato veggie

just take it one meal at a time.
i am a baker and had no problem subbing things out.

Just thought of another question, when DD starts cereal, is there a special brand, or are the oatmeal and rice cereal milk free?

DD#1 has a milk allergy and I EBF until 11 months.
Like Janice, I never went to formula. Actually, my PED at the time never even recommended it. DD's skin was terrible and so where her diapers. I want to say by a full week her skin cleared up and her poops were normal. It can take up 3 weeks for the proteins to leave your body.
As far as eliminating. My PED recommended to to just start with the obvious and see how it goes. So I started cutting out:
milk
cheese
sour cream
ice cream
butter
yogurt
cakes because of fillings
sherbet

It didn't effect DD if I had lets say meatballs and the breadcrumbs had cheese in them. Certain items that had whey in when DD was eating table foods bothered her. Even now that DD is 4, she can't eat those items, but can have items that have some dairy in it now.

It is really going to be trial and error until you figure it out.

It isn't an easy diet to follow-- but boy did I lose weight! Some products that helped -- smart balance spread instead of butter, most bread is okay. I cut out most cake, but angel food cake -- I would eat it with cool whip and fruit. Vienna Fingers didn't bother her, so I still ate those for a sugar fix. I was also able to eat the granola bars without chocolate in them. Like I said, it wasn't an easy diet, but I honestly never felt healthier -- After this pregnancy, I might do it again even if my 2nd baby doesn't have the allergy!

This is reassuring...Ive been reading labels, and some of what you mentioned has ingredients in it that contain milk protein...but im hoping DDs allergy is minor so if I can have some of the same things...she seemed to be fine until last week when I started eating Chobani yogurts every day and having latte icecream at night...thats when I noticed the mucous/blood in her poop...

I havent found a bread that didnt list milk or soy (even though Im not completey cutting out soy since the ped didnt say too...)

ETA that Im totally looking foward to the weight loss!!!

Rudi's organic bread is milk & soy free. It's also delicious! I get it at Whole Foods but S&S carries it too.
