Baby crying when you are driving....
Just curious - what do you do when you are driving and the baby is howling away in the back seat?

Re: Baby crying when you are driving....
IF I know she is okay, sometimes I just let her cry for a little bit. Other times I reach around and that binkie goes right in!

He doesnt even take the binky anymore - he will cry when I 1st put him into his seat - we need to cruise for a while - and he cries when I stop at a red light or if there is traffic - sorry your highness, the royal chariot has to abdie by road rules...

This is Christopher too (but he doesn't mind going in the seat) He LOVES the highway b/c we are speeding right along, sounds like we are going to have racecar drivers.
But I do the same as Katie, woobie if he is slightly more hysterical. One time a couple of weeks ago he wanted to hold my finger for some reason and that calmed him down.

Syd used to cry all the time in the car, nothing I could do...she wouldn't take a pacifier and if she fell asleep great, if not, oh well.

I keep driving. I stopped once and I said never again. My son hated the car for the first 3-4 months.

Oh god, BTDT, it took my DD a good 2 months to outgrow that stage. I hated taking her everywhere. Nothing I did worked really so I just stuck it out and made sure we never went too far. One thing that *may* have helped was taking her sound machine in the car and putting it on white noise in the backseat with her.

Re: Baby crying when you are driving....
I wont stop, most of the times if they are crying in the car seat it is because they are really tired, so I drive faster and make sharp turns and it will put them to sleep, or they are hungry, so I race home for a bottle.

I almost blew a red light one day bc Jack was screaming so loud. Sometimes I start to clap and sing with the music and then he will stop to listen....this is when i put the radio up a little and t ususally keeps his attention until we start moving again.

Re: Baby crying when you are driving....
Alex was, and still is, a habitual crier in the car. In the early days it was hysterical. SHe would be completely quiet until I came to a stop sign or red light, then she would start wailing. Then it would stop the moment I hit the gas.
When she was very young, if she was crying, I would stop, give her a bottle, and check her diaper. If she didn't need anything, and continued crying, I would just drive with her crying.

Re: Baby crying when you are driving....
Luckily my boys have all been great infants/very easy going.
But a few times that I wasnt able to reach the binky while driving, or wasnt sure what was bothering them, I did pull over and see what the deal was. and I really dont like pulling over on the side of the highway or even a regular street.
I will only pull over if its a "pain" cry or something is really not right. But for the most part, I keep driving, sing to them, change the song, and it usually distracts them and makes them forget why they were crying to begin with.

I ask him politely to hush.
I certainly don't stop...but we aren't very far from home too often at this point! I've noticed he hates getting in the carseat and stroller, too. I just tune it out.

Do you put the music on? A lot of times that will help. I know Steven used to start fussing every time the song would stop and go to the next

Re: Baby crying when you are driving....
In the beginning, I would panic & pull over to see what was wrong.
After that, I would sing a song or turn up the radio
When they were toddlers, I would say "Remain calm! You are absolutely fine." (to reassure myself more than them), which turned into some funny situations when Joseph would tell crying babies to remain calm.

Re: Baby crying when you are driving....
Nothing really helped until she just outgrew it and learned to appreciate car rides . But what sometimes helped was blasting the music. Unless it just made me hear the cries less .

Re: Baby crying when you are driving....
I usually talk or sing her favorite songs. Most of the time the sining works, other times she continues to cry.
I know she's fine, she's usually tired and passes out after a few minutes of crying.
She gets angry when I stop at lights too, but hey it's her first lesson on how you can't always get what you want

Re: Baby crying when you are driving....
My rule is - if it's time to eat and it's my fault we're not home yet I feel really bad. If they are just in one of their hungry moods and crying I don't let myself feel bad.
I usually sing the alphabet song REALLY loud and that gets them calm enough for me to get home. Works every time!

More like BLAST the music - DH and I will put on Linkin Park or something - loud enough to drown him out, and maybe he can commiserate and sing along with them!!!

Perhaps you are mistaking his singing along to Linkin Park as crying...Maybe try a more soothing song like Wheels on the Bus

I also reach around and put that pacifier right in and he quiets...unless it's time to eat--then there's nothing I can do but race home.
