Autism diagnosis that was dropped or changed because of misdiagnosis.

Anyone go through this with their DC? Please share story. I will be re-evaluating my DS. I'm curious to know what they determined if it is not an ASD.

Re: Autism diagnosis that was dropped or changed because of misdiagnosis.

DS was diagnosed a little after 2 yo with PDD-NOS by a pediatric neurologist. When he was about 4.5 we took him to a developmental pediatrician. She told me that he does not fall on the spectrum. She said that his communication and conversation skills were not consistent with a child on the spectrum. She said his ability to show empathy also wasn't consistent. So she diagnosed him with ADHD and anxiety.

He is 6.5 now. In my unprofessional opinion I think he definitely still has ASD characteristics. Whether or not we call it that is irrelevant. He still receives services in school (PT, OT, Speech). He is in a mainstream 1st grade class with a shared aid.

Re: Autism diagnosis that was dropped or changed because of misdiagnosis.

My son received a PDD-NOS diagnosis at 19 months and was confirmed by two medical doctors at 24 months and 3 years. He is now 4 1/2 and has lost his ASD diagnosis and it has been replaced by ADHD. The doctor does not see anything that points towards ASD, however he certainly has "quirks." He also has sensory issues.

i had a lengthy discussion about this with his doctor...about whether my son's original diagnonsis was wrong since there is no "cure" for autism. In young children, ADHD and SPD can present as autism like. It also could be that because of all the intervention and therapies he was given at such an early age helped him to overcome and compensate. So did he have it or did he not have it. Unanwered question but I try not to concentrate on the label. I know where my son was at 19 months and I thank every single one of his teachers and for EI for getting him the help he needed. He has come so far and if he needed a wrong diagnosis to get it then so be it.
