Australia?????
I am going to Australia for a work conference next May and decided since my airfare is paid for we are going to fly my DH out the week after and stay to travel for a week. Anyone been and can recommend places to go.
I will be in Hobart in Tasmania but would probably meet DH back in Sydney.
TIA

Re: Australia?????
I lived in Sydney (DH is from Sydney) for almost 5 years. What kind of things are you looking to do? Did you say you have one week?
I've never been to Tasmania, so I have no helpful hints there, sorry.

My program is 5 days and I am not allowed to travel before hand so I figure if DH is meeting me at the end of the program then we will stay at least a week to make it worth while for him due to the long flights.
I think I want a few days in Sydney and I would love to go up to the Great Barrier Reef.

Re: Australia?????
OK, so I'm not sure of the logistics of your flights, etc. but going to the Great Barrier Reef from Sydney is a 3 hour flight. Australia is as big as the US, so flying to Cairns (pronounced Cans) is like flying to Florida. Also keep jet lag in mind for your husband.
That being said, it seems like you are more interested in the Great Barrier Reef. I'd fly to Cairns, but I'd stay in Port Douglas if you can. The reef is better there, but it's an hour or so drive. Cairns is kind of a hole, but it's good to get activities from. If you are short on time, then stay in Cairns, so you can see what you want to.
Things to do from Cairns/Port Douglas:
-Great Barrier Reef. DH and I did a full day boat tour with a full seafood lunch. We went in July (winter), so we didn't have to wear stinger suits. The weather was bad, but we went out and snorkelled. It was amazing!
-Rainforest and Daintree tour. DH and I did a full day tour. This was so good! We had a guide and he drove and provided lunch. We went to Cape Tribulation, did a boat tour of the Daintree (saw lots of crocs!), and went to a zoo of some sorts. We also saw a Cassowary in the wild! They are rare to see in the wild!
-Hold a Koala. You can only hold koalas in Queensland, so this is your chance! I forget the name of the zoo, but you can find out more info at tourist centres.
That is my musts for Cairns. I went 10 years ago, so I forget a lot of small details!
You can also go to the Whitsundays. I never went, but I have heard it's really nice.
Sydney:
Opera House and Harbour Bridge. You can do a tour of the Opera House, but I heard it's not necessary. You can climb up the Harbour Bridge, but it's expensive (everything in Australia is!!!).
Wander down by the Rocks and have a drink in some pubs.
Bondi- Bronte walk. This is my favourite thing to do in Sydney. It's such a nice walk.
Taronga Zoo. This is good, but if you have the time I suggest going to Featherdale in Blacktown. You can touch a koala there and feed kangaroos. I like it much more than Taronga.
Newtown for good Thai food. The Bank Hotel (Hotels are pubs there) has good Thai food. ETA: the Thai place in Newtown closed down. But you can get good Thai food in Newtown. Have a look at eatablity.com.au for reviews.
Botanical gardens are good for fruit bat spotting.
QVB. Town Hall stop. Cool building and the Laksa in the basement is great!
If you need restaurant suggestions, I can help, but I haven't been there in years, so some things might have closed down.
It will be too cold to go to beaches and swim, sorry.
If you can do a day trip to the Blue Mountains and see the Three Sisters in Katoomba, do it.
Hunter Valley is also nice for wine, but it's a 4 hour drive. I did a great day trip with my mom, but it was a really long day.
I hope that helps! It's all over the place, but let me know if you have any more questions.

Australia?????
I have been to Sydney and I suggest the Bondi to Bronte walk. You walk along several beaches and parks and the beaches in Sydney are absolutley breathtaking! You can also climb the Harbor Bridge which I was too chicken to do! I loved Cronulla beach I used to run there in the mornings and there is also a nice cafe along side there. The Tarango zoo is fun and the Koala bears are adorable! Of course the Opera House. Enjoy I love it there and cannot wait to go back!

Re: Australia?????
Posted by Milerose I loved Cronulla beach...
Yes Cronulla is very nice, too! I lived 10 minutes from there and went there often, but it is an hour from Town Hall.
Manly is also very nice. You can do a Harbour cruise with tea for a few hours. That was nice as well!
