at what age do babies begin to roll over?

I was watching the laugh and learn about newborn care today and the lady said at around 4 months. My SIL's twins, who are 4 months, haven't started to do that yet, but they were also preemie - born at 34wks. Does that make a difference?

Eta: her ped said he wants them to see a neurologist...

My twin boys rolled @ 5 months. They were preemies as well born @ 34 weeks. They were slightly behind with a lot due to the 6 weeks early, developmentally they allow for the delay due to the premie and adjust the age.
My daughter started rolling @ 4 months. But again she was on time.
I would not worry twins will catch up my boys are almost 2 and are finally caught up. The pediatrican told me @ age 2 they stop adjusting their age for prematurity.

My one son saw a physical therapist for about 6 weeks as his neck was a lil to the side --- it worked and he ended up straightening out.
But @ 4 months it is totally normal for twins not to be rolling and their may be another reason for the neurologist referral...

I am not sure whats the normal time frame but my babies did it at:

:
tummy to back- 1 month old
back to tummy- the day after he turned 3 months old


#1:
tummy to back- 1 month old
back to tummy- 4 months old


#2:
tummy to back- 1 1/2 months old
back to tummy- 4 1/2 months old


4 months doesn't sound late to me for a premie! My DD's we walking well before a year so they weren't behind in development.

DD is a chunky monkey and still not rolling over at 5 and a half months ...She goes from her back to her side and thats it...I am not concerned at all ...

my DS had issues with rolling for a while. My ped said that rolling is not a good developmental milestone, becuase it's highly variable when babies do it.

DS was definitely on the later side (the ped said super-tall babies sometimes are delayed), and only became a good "roller" at 7.5 months. I will say that he didn't even ask if we saw rolling until at least 4 months.... so I don't think 4 months would be considered 'delayed'.

The reason the ped said to see a nuerologist is b/c of the rolling? That seems odd to me.

My DS rolled early - he was roling belly to back within an few days of coming home from the hospital consistently - he would roll back to belly sporadically but not regularly until 4 months.

HOWEVER, most of my friends babies were not rolling this early and there was nothing wrong with them at all in fact, they were told by their peds that rolling isn't even considered a necessary milestone. My cousin had a 5 month old who still isn't rolling and he is a dr. and doesnt seem concerned in the slightest.

So does my DD and she is 8.5 months. the ped said that she may not roll over due to her chubbiness.

Seems soon to be concerned with just that.

DD just started rolling at 6+ mths and does it consistently now at 7 mths. But she is on the larger side and I didn't do too much tummy time so the ped was NOT concerned.

Gianna rolled tummy to back at around 2 mos and then stopped.

NOW, at 5 mos, she rolls like CRAZY back to front, front to back, nonstop. It's esPECIALLY fun when does this while she should be sleeping at night. What a fun little phase she's going through!!! Keeps me up for hours!

DS was just under 4 months for belly to back and just under 5 months from back to belly

DD turned 5 months yesterday. She **can** roll from tummy to back (has done it 5 or 6 times) but VErY rarely actually does it. Im not concerned.

DS rolled tummy to back at 3 months, and back to tummy at 5 months.

My DD didn't do it until she was 7 months old. (tummy to back) At almost 9 months she was finally able to go from back to tummy too. Every baby is different so I wouldn't worry. In fact my ped said he would've ONLY been concerned if by her 6 month visit she wasn't starting to sit on her own. Sitting is a more advanced skill and he said some babies skip the rolling (and the crawling) because they don't spend lots of time on their tummy anymore. (My DD despised tummy time)

I think at 4 months there is zero cause for concern about not rolling. Babies sleep on their backs now so it's going to take them a lot longer to finally start being able to roll.....not like when we were kids and always slept on our tummies from Day 1.

DS still doesn't roll over at 4 months, he'll roll from back to side but doesn't quite get that back leg over. I'm not concerned at all, neither is his dr.

DS didn't roll over until 7 months, then he did it for awhile and now he rarely does it My ped wanted me to call EI if he wasnt rolling by 7 months but he started just in time.

Jen - Samantha was rolling over at 6.5 weeks! Not consistently, but she was, I know that's not the norm though.

She was rolling from belly to back. Now at 4.5 months she is trying to get from her back to her belly, she can't quite figure out though how to get over that arm.

I do think sometimes preemies are developmentaly delayed for some milestones. I also don't think it's a huge deal about them not rolling over. Alot of books (and my ped) say that with the "back to sleep" campaign and keeping babies sleeping on their backs, that it's not really a milestone they are concerned with if they don't roll over.

The normal range for rolling is 3-7 months. My DS rolled in both directions a few times by 4.5 months, but hasn't done either since (he is now 6 months)

That can make a difference but Sydnie who was born at 39 weeks rolled belly to back @ 4.5 months and back to belly @ 6.5 months.

DD was on the late side, she rolled over at close to 6 months-they all do it at different stages.

my DD started at 7 months but wasn't doing it all the time until 8 months. Then again, she had reflux and hated being on her tummy (still does). Plus, she never crawled and started walking at 10 1/2 months old. Babies don't read the developmental charts!
